ENTERTAINMENTS

KOSY THEATRE. “EVANGELINE” AND “ODDS ON.” That truth is stranger than fietjon and frequently decidedly more entertaining is emphasised in Edwin Carewo’s new United Artists picture “Evangeline” starring Dolores Del Rio, now showing at tho Kosy Theatre. “Evangeline” is based on one of the greatest heart dramas in all American history, yet it has a romantic theme which by virtue of its beauty and devotion has become one of the classics of literature. The screen version of Longfellow’s famous verse is by no means an ordinary entertainment. Rich in colour, tensely dramatic and replete with thrilling episodes “Evangeline” vibrates with compelling interest and is a master-picture in every sense of the word. In his film play Mr Carewe has turned back the pages of history to the peaceful Acadians of Grand I’rc, torn from their homes by tho stern order of a despotic governor-general on the eve of Evangeline’s wedding to Gabriel, the blacksmith’s son. “Odds On” is an Australian made film and is a most thrilling and interesting drama of the Australian turf with a big east headed by Phyllis Gibbs and Cheek Hayes. DE LUXE TALKIES. ALL-DIALOGUE AND SINGING COMEDY. “Excellent entertainment” is the phrase which best classifies the latest Fox production, “Nix on Dames,” an all-talking movietone comedy which opens at the Theatre de Luxe to-night. It is a tuneful,-spark-ling story of two women and two vvoincnliaters, filmed against the colourfub'background of an actors’ boarding-house. Ihe gentlemen with the anti-feminine complex are acrobats. In practising a now "stunt” one of them has his shoulder broken, and they decide to rest in New "York. Two highly personable young ladies appear on the scene and life becomes quite complicated. x\n ends as happily as could be expected, with the two damsels getting ill their most effective work at the finish. Messrs Gilbert and Baer’s catchy song numbers make it thoroughly enjoyable. Mac Clarke, Robert Ames and William Harrigan have the principal roles. In support of the principal feature, a number of admirably selected short subjects arc shown, including an all talking comedy entitled, “Detectives Wanted”; a specialty item, Schubert Serenade; a Fox Movietone News, and a Paramount Sound News. “MARRIED IN HOLLYWOOD.” In “Married in Hollywood,” tho -first operetta to reach the sound screen, there are nine distinctive song hits, one of which, “Dance Away the Night,” with music by Dave Stamper and lyrics byHarlan Thompson, is destined to surpass in popularity “The Merry Widow Waltz” of a generation ago. Tho same composers have evolved another tuneful number, “Until One Comc&- Along,” which will run “Dance Away tho Night” a close race for popularity. And still a third entrancing number is “Deep in Love,” with music byOscar Strauss and lyrics by Harlan Thompson. “Married in Hollywood,” which will have its first local showing at the De Luxe Theatre at 2 p.m. next Thursday, is based on the operetta by Oscar Strauss, one of the outstandingly important figures in international music. Not second in importance to the principals is the ensemble composed of a singing chorus of 100 and a dancing group of 60. Edward Roycc, rated as the foremost director of stage ensembles both in America and Europe, has given his art and experience to the direction of tho ensembles. This all talking, singing and dancing production, the music of which was composed by Oscar Straus, features a symphony orchestra numbering one hundred players. The management advise that box plans for the entire season will open at the Central Booking Office, ’phone 7178, at 10 a.m. to-morrow.

PALACE TALKIES, ALL-TALKING THRILLER. One of America’s best known, “gunmen” appears in “Night Ride,” the Universal talking picture of gangland and tho newspaper world, showing at the Palace Theatre to-night. But it is not the kind of a “gunman” one would think. He is Harry Stubbs, who plays the role of tho reporter pal of Joseph Schildkraut, star of the picture. Stubbs is a champion trap shooter, an all round* shot and a ‘bait” and “fly” caster of American reputation. He is president, of the Adirondack Rod and Gun Club, chief gunner of the Lambs’ Gun Club, and secretary of tho famous Tekenink Club of New York, an association of prominent sportsmen. Tho Tekenink Club is unique for its preservation of game during the winter in eastern hunting territories. W T hcn deep snow covers the ground and cuts off the food supply of deer and other animals, members of the club plant fodder for the famished boasts.
