RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) The Taumarunui and Ashburton fixtures aro the only ones to engage attention this week. Another effort is being made to get a race out of Kilburn, who was a very useful hurdler when right. The nominations for the Dunedin meeting exceed those of last season by 58 and they were, in turn, 100 better than in 1928. As a rosult of Goshawk’s success in Australia, his weight has been increased from 9.9 to 9.13 in the Cornwall Handicap to be decided on the first day of the Great Northern meoting. Toxeuma was only eased up for a short time and it is now reported that he is in steady work again and, together with Grattus. will probably go to the Auckland winter meeting. Pakitero and Henry of Navarro are having a spell. Gay Crest is enjoying a spell at present and nis Riccarton mentor, T- Lloyd, will not put him into work again for a few weeks. He is to bo nominated for the principal spring handicaps in Australia. A fetauref of tho Nelson programme was the “hat track” performed by the Reefton trainer, A. G. Griffon, who trained Seventh Heaven, Smithereens, and Ravine, who accounted for the first three races on the programme. Seventh Heaven and Smithereens are tho property of Mr E. W. Spencer, president of the Reefton Jockey Club. Tidal, after racing for some time in Sydney, where he eventually broke down, is back at J. T. Jamieson’s stable at Takanini. It is not intended to train him for he will take up stud duties. The French-bred horse has been an unfortunate venture for his owners as the result of unsound ness. The Sydney trainer, George price, considered that ho would have won the last A.J.C. Metropolitan had he not gone wrong. Tiega broke down on the opening day of the Hawera fixture and he is reported to have been in a bad way when he got back to his quarters. The old fellow had promised to be distinctly useful in tho jumping branch but his pins had always proved to bo doubtful. Tiega had been accorded a nomination in the field for the Great Northern Hurdles, but it would now appear that his active (lays are over. Rawhetu, who is nominated for the Great Northern Hurdle?, also figures in tho field entered for the Greenlanc Steeplechase, which is also decided on opening day of next month’s meeting at Ellerslie, cotnmepts tho Waikato Times. The Day Comi3 t gelding has been given some schooling ot late over tho big obstacles at headquarters in Auckland.

The rising two-year-old half-brother by Hunting Song to that good galloper, Nancy Lee, will race as Middle Watch. He is said to be a youngster full of promise. If he turns out as usetul on the race tracks as his sister, he will be profitable property to control. In Franco, as well as in England, horses are galloped the full distance of their races. Just- before the last mail to hand left England it was reported that the French horse Slipper had been galloped the Lincoln distance. Ho was then to do only healthy exercise before leaving for England—only one trial, and then back to strong, healthy exercise. Inner Harbour, who was bred by Mr Frank Ormond, and who once raced in his colours, for some time has been in the Gisborne district, where ho is owned, has been despatched to the Auckland district, where he will join up with Guthbert Morse’s team for the purpose of being put through a course of studies over the obstacles. A remarkable coincidence worthy of mention is brought to mind when reviewing the published result of the Tawhiti Hack Handicap at the recent Egmont fixture. The race in question this year resulted in a win for Merry Melody, while the judge was unable to separate Joyspear and Tentcall, who dead-heated for second.’ In the same race the year previous there was also a dead-heat for second place, betwen Royal Acre, and Calamine, while at the previous meeting on the same course King Midas und Manly divided honours for second place. It is remarkable the number of dead-hearts for second berth over the eight and a-half furlongs on the Hawera course. Mr T. H. Lowry has secured the stables at Greenmeadows (the homo of the Napier Park Racing Club) formerly occupied by Mr W. Howard’s team, and apartments for stable attendants, etc., are being erected, making the place a convenient and up-to-dato establishment (writes “Hermit” in the Hawke’s Bay Herald). Mr Lowry’s horses, a beam of six, in charge of Mr R. Alexander, have already arrived at thoir now quarters. The team comprises Great Charter, Courtesy, Commandant (the Legionnaire (imp.(—Bees in Amber two-year-old colt), Scotland Yard (a two-year-old bay gelding by Grandcourb—En Parole, which has just come in, and a couple of yearlings. Chrysology has been turned out for a spell, which should give him a chance to till out. Mr Lowry's horses wero trained at Greenmeadows for several years, and some of his best winners, Desert Gold and Nigger Minstrel among them, were trained on the Napier Park course. If the popular Okawa breeder securos a couple more the equal of the two named, or of Bobrikoff, his name will be placed high on the winning owners’ list.

WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE MEETING. HURDLES WON BY PRINCE LU. GRANDSTAND STEEPLES TO FLYING SWIFT. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, May 17. The weather was fine for the commencement of the second day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting, but heavy rain set in just prior to the start of the May Hurdles. The attendance was largo, those present including members of the British Rugby team as the guests of the Jockey Club. The totalisator investments to-day were £23,524, making the total for tho meeting, £46,090, as against £48,891 10s last year. An inquiry was held into tho running of tho Rata Hurdles and it was announced that D. O’Connor, rider of Lin Arlington, had bconsuspcnded for ono month for crossing. Two horses fell in the rGandstand Steeplechase, but L. Dulieu (Calitho) escaped with light concussion and A. McOonald (Rod Bank) was not seriously hurt. Both falls were reported to bo purely accidental. Airforce was a good favourite for the Hack Hurdles, but ho lost his rider after going half a mile. Town Bird and Wyeford led in turn, the latter being first into tho straight. Second Thought was close up and tho latter finished best, winning by a length from Lin Arlington. First Ruler was fourth with Valma next. General Gas was a slightly better lavounte than Werata for the Balgownie Hack Handicap. Latakia led most of the way and was first into the straight from Banbndge and Auctioneer. A splendid finish resulted in favour of Werata by a short head from Banbridge, who beat Latakia by a similar distance.. Brilliant Light was fourth. Aurora Borealis was a slightly better favourite than Prince Lu for the May Hurdles The latter took charge at the start and led all the way to win by a length and a half from Perlo de Leon, with Beaumont a neck away, just ahead of Elicit. Red Bank was favoured a little more than Airtight and Brigadier Bill f or the Grandstand Stooples. Maidos made the running, but Flying Swift took charge half a mile from home and won by four lengths from Kowtahi who beat Airtight by a

similar distance. Calithe and Red Bank fell. Silvermino was a hot favourite for the Empire Handicap but ho had to be content with second place. High Falutin’ was handy all the way and finishing strongly won by half a neck from the favourite. Austerity was close up third, just ahead of Atholspoar. Valstreet was the favourite for the Farewell Hack. Blue Paper was in front at the turn for homo, but Valstreet cut her down in the run honio and won by a head from Blue Paper who was two lengths ahead of Ben Hur. Portray was fourth. Laughing Prince was tho favourite for the concluding event, but he was beaten by Melissa for first placo. Melissa and Just an Idea led into the straight, the favourite being beaten away back, but ho finished at great pace to get second money. RACING IN DETAIL.
