The money was to pay interest and sinking fund. During the past few years there had been sufficient revenue to pay this, but there was not sufficient to allow expenditure on repairs, etc. So the rate had to be levied during the last two years. It was hoped that this would not be necessary in the future. From the Palmerston North _ Hospital Board enclosing a copy of tho estimates for the year 1930-31, and pointing out that the levy on the council would bo £204 7s 4d for maintenance and £37 12s 3d for capital expenditure.—Tho Mayor said that Foxton was costing the hoard a good deal for charitable aid. When tho matter of tar-sealing the portion of the highway between the borough boundary and the Manawatu County Council boundary came up for discussion, Cr Barron said that his intention in mentioning the matter was to have the Hirnatangi highwuy connected with Victoria Street and not tho borough highway boundary as stated in the district engineer’s letter. Tho town clerk said the Manawatu County Council engineer was preparing an estimate for the latter work, which was more extensive and would consequently be more expensive. It was decided to await the estimate befor taking any further action. Accounts amounting to £9lO 3s 6d were passed for payment; also an account for £35 6s 8d for beautifying work carried out in the borough. Tho Main Highways Board submitted a report on the borough railway crossings, suggesting that a hedge bo removed on Mrs Reader’s property in Lady’s Mile and two pine trees at the racecourse crossing. The letter was received as the matter will be attendd to by the board. It was decided to obtain an estimate for widening Fuller Street cuttings. The gas manager submitted an estimate of £8 15s for papering in the gas manager’3 house. It was decided to have the work carried out.
