CABINET MEETING.
UNEMPLOYMENT PLANS. Per Press Association. ROTORUA, May 14. The question of unemployment received further consideration by Cabinet at its meeting to-day. Following a discussion the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Wawl, stated that the total number of men registered at bureaux as fit for heavy work were, according to the latest returns, 3502, less those who had either refused or left Government w6rks of their own accord, sinoe January 1, totalling 548, leaving a net total 'of 2954. The Public Works Department had already arranged for the employment for 606 men, and with a view to affording further measures of relief the Government had decided to make provision for an additional 1500 men in various districts of the Dominion to be employed on public works and afforestation. There were several other schemes under consideration. It would be seen, therefore, that the total of those who were at present unfortunately out of work would be materially reduced at an early date. “The matter of dealing with the difficult question of unemployment,” concluded Sir Joseph, “will continue to receive the closest attention of the Government with tire object of providing as much work as possible before the winter comes on. I might say that''one of the private afforestation companies in the Dominion recently acquired a substantial area of land in the Rotorua district, and it is their dntenton to employ a large number of men in planting operations as soon as possible.” . _ Cabinet will continue its deliberations to-night and to-morrow. The period of the deliberations depends upon circumstances.
