EMPIRE VETERANS.
THEIR EXCELLENCIES’ INTEREST. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, May 14. Members of the King’s Empire Veterans’ Association were entertained yesterday at Government House by His Excellency the Governor-General and L.idy Bledisloe, both of whom expressed keen interest in the association. Eighteen of the old soldiers and sailors, each wearing his medals, gathered in the drawing room, where Captain James Stichbury, officer commanding, and Lieutenant George Powley, addressed Their Excellencies. Captain Stichbury explained that the association was founded by a former Governor, Lord Ranfurly" nearly 30 years ago, and since then successive Governors had all taken the kindliest interest in its affairs. The guests were entertained to morning tea on a sunny verandah in front of Government House. His Excellency assured the members of his and Lady Bledisloe’s warmest interest in tire affairs of the association, and said that it was a great pleasure to see them at Government House. He hoped to meet members many times during his term of office, and could always assure them of his heartiest interest. Their Excellencies were each interested in the reminiscences of the veterans, one of whom spoke of incidents in Auckland 82 years ago.
