ninth annual festival. MARTON GIRL WINS VOCAL SCOLARSHIP. The competitions are most popular this year. There was a crowded auditorium last evening, and a most attractive and interesting programme, including sacred solo (gentlemen), humorous recitation (gentlemen), song in character (ladies) and the piano solo (open). Miss Molly Cullen (Marton) won the vocal scholarship, while Miss M. Hamerton (Patea) was second. The judge, Mr Crossley Clitheroe, stated that Miss Cullen’s voice was of a round, rich quality. She lrad shown very high musicianship and a wonderful interpretative sense. Mr Clitheroe also congratulated Miss Hamerton on a very fine performance, and said that as a singer she showed great promise. She had been handicapped bv a recent illness, but he advised her to keep on practising and to try again next year. Tire first demonstration concert will be held to-morrow evening.
