POHANGINA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Poliangina County Council was held yesterday, Cr. S. J. Strahan presiding. Others present were C»*s. W. Howell, T. Close, W. McKay, G. M. Arbon and H. Knight. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr D. Watson) submitted his monthly report as follows: Awahou Riding.—General road maintenance work has been attended to. The main highway was trimmed up with the power grader. At an early date a start will be made to cut back and widen out some of the bends in the road near Church Hill. Coal Creek Riding.—A fair amount of repair gravel was carted out by the permanent surfaceman. Slips were cleared off the roads and the watertables attended to. Mangaone Riding.—A large concrete pipe cuivert was put in on Taonui-Raumai Highway. Plans, etc., for the approval of the Public Works Department will be prepared for a concrete culvert that will take the place of at least one of the old wooden bridges on this road. Several bad bends have been cut back, widened out and graded. Metal is being carted and spread bv the motor trucks. The Ashhurst-Pohangina Highway has been trimmed up with the power grader. The drains at Raumai are being cleaned out. Mangapikopiko Riding.—A concrete culvert and walls were built in on Makonra Road. The old thirty foot span bridge will be removed and replaced with an earth filling during tlie coming month. The roadman has been engaged widening out narrow bends on Norsewood Road. Pohangina Riding.—Drains have been cleaned out and the metal on the highway raked in with the power grader. No. 2 motor truck is at present carting and spreading metal on the main road. Tamaki Riding.— A good quantity of fine river-bed metal was carted and spread for future maintenance. A start was made carting pit gravel for building up the main road, which at present is being shaped up with the power grader. Umutoi Riding.—Most of tho roads in this riding have been shaped up with the grader and quite a number of sharp bends and narrow places in the roads have been widened out and improved. The crushing machine has been shifted from Apiti to Piri Piri, and a start to crush some of the limestone will be made as soon as convenient. Tunipo Road. —About 30 concrete pipe culverts have been put in, and the excavating and filling work finished. Some of the gravel was carted; but as the road is very soft this work had to be discontinuel. HOSPITAL HOARD LEVY. The Palmerston North Hospital Board advised that the levy on the county was £1204 18s 4d lor maintenance and £221 15s fid for capital. It was pointed out that interest on overdue levys was mandatory, and that the amount would be payable in four quarterly instalments. The chairman commented that there was an increase of £l6 10s over the previous year’s figures. Cr. Howell stated that the valuation of the county had altered during the year. He did not think there would be any appreciable alteration in the rate of levy for a period of years. The Waihi Hospital Board levied rates ten times those of the Palmerston North Board. GENERAL. The county clerk and treasurer (Mr A. E. Orgias) submitted the following .financial statement: —Credit Bank of New Zealand: Cementery account £9B 3s Bd, loan account £984 4s lid, plant account £6Ol Is 3d; county fund account, cr. £3200 3s (less accounts for payment £742 4s Id, alreadv paid £B3 7e lid); credit balance £2541 6s lOd. The Kairanga County Council forwarded £lO3 13s as the Pohangina County’s proportion of heavy traffic fees collected.
