RACING NEWS.

WANGANUI RACES. BIG FIELDS CARDED. THE RUNNERS REVIEWED. (By “Binocular.”) The Wanganui Jockey Club will carry the winter jumping activities a step further to-morrow whon tho opening clay of its winter fixture will be held. Excellent response from owners has been forthcoming in practically every instance and the dividing of the Purua Hack Handicap into two sections has become necessary. Tho club has, however, decided to mako it two separate race 3 and, in order to cope with the situation, tho totalisator will bo opened twice and the first race has been advanced to 11.30 o'clock. The programme to be submitted to-morrow is as under: — PURUA HACK HANDICAP, of £135. j

Eleven candidates figure in the first division of the Pnrua Hack Handicap in which Werata is topweight with 9.0., but, as the result of their successes at Eginont, Brilliant Light, Latakia and I’aiko have all been advanced in the poundages. The amended weight* might improve the prospects of Werata and Tahomc, in consequence, although in view of the fact that the course is of a turning nature, positions at the barrier will play a part in the final summing up of patrons. PURUA HACK HANDICAP, of £135. Six furlongs. (Second Division.)

In the second division 13 candidates figure, the Awapuni representative, Hunting Boy, being at the top of tho scale. Callapat, who is in receipt of 71bs from Hunting Boy, is a smart sort, while Treasury, Statuary, Ben Hur, and Tcntcall are worthy of consideration. Possibly the favourite will come from Hunting j Boy, Statuary and Callapat. i HACK STEEPLECHASE, of £175. Twoj miles. i

Waitaunaha, a winner at Egmont last Thursday, has been advanced 81b3 and now head 6 the poundages in the Hack, Steeplechase. The manner in which he scored on the earlier occasion will entitle him to strong support once again, although Diana’s Lad should bo improved by his Taranaki racing. Maidos met with mishaps at both his appearances at Hawera, but it only needs for him to avoid trouble in the raco to make him troublesome to Waitaunaha and Diana’s Lad. WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE, of £SOO. Thrco miles.

The field in the Wanganui Steeplechase is almost identical with that which contested the Egmont Steeples, Ponjola, the winner on that occasion, having been advanced 91bs which should bring him nearer to Matu. Airtight might show improvement, but the principal support promises to be forthcoming for the other pair.

In a higher scale of weights, Whenuanui is required to carry the steadier of 11.7 in the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles with Vivo 71bs away. As Whenuanui won with 10.3 at Hawora on Thursday last, Vivo, who finished fourth, does not appear to bo very favourably placed with the winner of that occasion required to givo her but an additional 31bs. There are a number of unknowns included in the field and, of the lighterweights, Skyrider, Airforce, Four Aces and Wyeford are entitled to respect. A difficult race to sum up in view of the unknown quantity, but possibly Four Aces, Airforce and Skyrider will figuro prominently. CENTURY HURDLES, of £4OO. Two

Awapuni supplies the topweight pair in ‘ the Century Hurdles in Mister Gamp and Elicit and they should worthily uphold this centre. Prince Lu is a northerner who might prove difficult, while Aurora Borealis and Diana’s Lad (if started here) will attract support. In view of Mister Gamp’s interrupted training, Elicit might be preferred to the Bronzetti gelding with Prince Lu and Aurora Borealis figuring prominently in the public fancy. CONNOLLY HANDICAP, of £3OO. One mile and a-quarter.

The Connolly Handicap invariably furnishes a great contest, although it frequently brings with it a surprise. Bright Glow, although she failed at is well worthy of the 9.0. allotted her. The Swell is getting close to the top class performers, but Cashier, if anything like his old self, is well in. While High Falutin, Austerity, Flying Juliet and Hipo may be dangerous lightweights, . the favourite promises to come from Bright Glow and Cashier, although a heavy track would improve the prospects of Hipo. BOROUGH HANDICAP, of £250. Six furlongs.

The day’s proceedings will conclude with the Borough Handicap—the open sprint—in which Laughing Prince is due to make his reappearance. Benzora is a long time getting on the winning list, biit it may not be sate to dismiss him altogether. Leitrim ran Lady Quex to a close finish at the Waikato meeting and with 8.4 is by no means harshly treated, while Royal Parade has but 6lbs more than what ho won with at Avondale. Ridgemount has been disappointing of late, but Paleta showed at Hawera that he may reach winning form at an early date. Lower down there are such likely sorts as Moa Bird, Atholspear, Kaihoro, Goblin Market, Just So, Equitant, Cuticle, Hopwood and Melissa, and patrons will have a wide scope for operations. Leitrim, Paleta and Just So, if favoured by good positions at the barrier, should command support, although Hopwood and Melissa might woll prove difficult to dispose of. TRACK NOTES. i CANDIDATES FOR WANGANUI. ; (By “Binocular.”)' ; Despite the fact that Awapuni furnishes ] a team of some 20 candidates, at Wanganui, | matters were, somewhat quiet on the courso yesterday morning. The tracks wcro in excellent order and, in the majority of i

cases, what fast work that was attempted was carried out on the plough. Mrs McDonald did not bring Blue Paper and Airforce home from Hawera, and Elicit, Potoaform and Llyn Du were taken through to the river-city on Sunday to pick up tho other pair. A. McDonald is going through each day to supervise their track operations. Birkbeck, who went sore at Hawera, was brought home and can be considered an unlikely starter. This centre fared comparatively well at the Hawera fixture by gathering in over £7OO in stake money. Of the trio who were returned winners. Brilliant Light and Aurora Borealis will bo found at Wanganui, but Merry Damon’s next appearance will be at Otaki, provided tho Polydamon gelding is not accorded a prohibitive poundage by tho handicapper. Brilliant Light was restricted to easy work yesterday morning, but the Australian Sun gelding looks none the worse for his Hawera trip. Coon Song, who claims an engagement in tho same division of the I’urua Hack Handicap as Brilliant Light, was restricted to trotting exercise with Trainer R. E. Hatch in the saddle. The mentor has another team member in Rioghail therein and tho Grandcourt gelding, with K. Voitre in the saddle, left seven furlongs behind in 1.33 1-5 in company with Glcnrossie (T. Green). Hunting Boy (T. Green) had Poppy Day (W. Broughton) as a partner over six furlongs, but they were not asked to give of their best in getting to the end of their task in 1.22. Both are inmates of L. Knapp’s stable and are both drawn in the second divsion of tne Purua Hack Handicap at Wanganui, but whereas the former ranks at the head of the handicap, Poppy Day is a maiden.

Red Bank (Green), who is down to mako his debut as a steeplechaser at Wanganui, was partnered by the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles candidate, F'our Aces (R. Mollis), over a mile, tho last six furlongs being left behind in 1.24. C. Robinson was to have ridden Red Bank, but with that rider being stood down for a month at Hawera, a new pilot will have to be found. Although A. Quinlivan intends being in attendance at Marlborough with Masher and Winlock, First Ruler will be at Wanganui and will be a runner in the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles in which H. Gordon will again be her pilot. The Chief Ruler mare appeared to have a great opportunity to prove herself in the weaker company at Marlborough, but her connections preferred tho fixture nearer homo. A sluggish track worker, she required 1.50 s to run a mile yesterday morning. S. Gcrrand will ride Winlock at Marlborough, but no rider has as yet been found for Masher. The Century Hurdles candidate, Mister Gamp (H. Gordon), and the Hack Hurdles candidate, Skyrider, with a stable lad in the saddle, galloped a mile and, timed from tho six furlong post, ran homo in 1.24. Both are well, but tho break in the Bronzetti gelding’s training may tell against him to-morrow. GENERAL. Arrowhead (K. Voitre), who will make a re appearance on the race track at Otaki, had Kcddar (Green) as a partner over five furlongs, the former being clear at tho post after running the distance in 1.6 I—s. Keddar is still a long way from his old self. Braggart (K. Voitre) and an AeroWrcnch gelding from Moutoa Lodge, with T. Green in thu saddle, had a keen struggle all the way up the straight, the former, who had the advantage in respect to weights, although he had tho outsido running, having his head in front at the finish after running tho five furlongs in lm. ss. Both aro duo to mako their debut at Otaki. G. New has the first of the progeny of Colossus in a chestnut yearling from Queen Elizabeth in work. A rich chestnut of good height and conformation, ho showed distinct promise in a sprint down tho straight in company with Merry Damon. A three-quarter brother in blood to Ruapapa, tho youngster will bo heard from later on in his career. Tho Mountain Crag mare Lady Alophen was a visitor to the tracks yesterday morning when sho had a-s Jjcr pilot ROll Hatch, son of the local mentor. Although quite at home in tho saddle, Hatch, Junr., promises to have too big a frame for tho game, although he might well have his chance as an amateur rider. Meantime it is stated that Lady Alophen is to be used as a military mount but, bred as sho is (Mountain Crag—San Fran marc), she should make good in the jumping branch. If there is anything in a name, a youngster apprenticed to R. E. Hatch at tho present time is destined to go far for ho boasts tho name of Hector Francis .Gray. Although ho gives one tho impression of having a fairly largo frame, the future may find him carrying on a name which has become very familiar to New Zealanders. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS Riding engagements announced for Wanganui where local horsemen and horses aro concerned aro as under: — H. Gordon. —First Ruler. D. O’Connor.—Mister Gamp. B. H. Morris. —Briliant Light. A. McDonald.—Red Bank, Democratic, Elicit. _ . . T. Green.— Hunting Boy, Tahoma, Royal Parado. K. Voitre.—Callanmore, Coon bong, Austerity, Treasury. .. . W. Broughton.—Grand Jury, Equitant, Poppy Day. . Provided he socurcs his license in timo, J. McDowell will have the ride on Rioghail. This apprentice lias displayed great promise at cxerciso on tho tracks and R. E. Hatch, through whoso hands ho has passed, predicts a promising future for him.
