MANAWATU COUNTY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held yesterday, Cr Barber presiding. Also present wore Crs Boyce, Perrott, McKolvie, Hunt and Reid. Leave of absenco was granted Cr Pearce. CORRESPONDENCE. From the district engineer, Railway Department, asking if tho council had come to any decision in tho matter ot the dedication of noad on the railway reserve at Kangiotu.— It was decided to notify the department that ono chain had been dedicated. From Mr M. Hunt, Rongotea, drawing attention to the state of a water channel opposite his property/ —Referred to Cl' Pearce and the engineer to report. From two ratepayers requesting the council to look into tho matter of an alleged complaint concerning the 11011-cleuning m a main drain by another ratepayer.—Deft to the engineer to take necessary action. From Mr Tostevin, chairman of the Sanson School Committee, asking tho council to open a drain in front of the school playground.—Left to tile engineer to take action. From Mr F. J. Lcgg, Bainessc, asking the council to remove the old road sign to the new road and repaint it, pointing out that the outlet from the sctiool 011 account of the sign was rather dangerous.— The traffic inspector reported that the matter had been attended to. From Messrs Keillor and Seifert and H. A. Seifert requesting the council to metal Te Rakehou Road so as to make it passable for winter traffic. —Referred to Cr Reid. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Tho county engineer (Mr 11. V. Bond) reported as follows: Main Highways.—Sanson-Bulls Road has been re-sealed throughout. Mt. Stewart hill has been prepared tor sealing, but owing to tho low temperatures experienced I recommend that tho surface be treated with one coat of cold emulsified bitumen to retain the surface throughout the winter, and that the surfacing with hot bitumen bo deferred until next summer. FcildingAwahuri Road has been surfaced with fin :' metal where necessary and graded. Tho roller has been at work upon the crown of Stewart’s line. Grading lias also been carried out. Diains and culverts are being cleaned on Hiinatangi-Sanson Road. Metal lias also been spread for top-dressing and grading has been carried out continuously. Hiniatungi-Foxton Road lias been graded, sumps have been cleaned out, and shoulders have been repaired. Tenders have been called for the paving with hot-mix of this road. Grading has been continued on Hiniatangi-Kaiigiotu Road. Shoulders and fascinings have been repaired. Top-dressing metal lias been spread and grading luo been carried out 011 Foxton-Slianiion Road. The Whirokino has been graded, shoulders built up, and some metal delivered to the dump trom the local pit. A ramp is now being built 011 the road by settlers to plans and specifications prepared. Foxton Beach Road lias been top-dressed with metal and graded. Grading has been carried out rn Tangimoana Road. Clay lias also been spread over a portion of the surface ready to receive metal. Longburn-Rongotca Road has been graded and drains cleaned out. Tho Oroua bridge on this road lias been tightened up, repaired and redcckcd. Ridings.—Sandon: Two bridges have been repaired on Taylor’s Line. A new deck lias been put on tho large wooden culvert on Gust’s Line. The top end of Kakariki Road has been surfaced with metal. Oliakea and Frecklington’s roads have been graded. An old wooden culvert has been replaced with concrete pipes 011 Frecklington’s Road. Mt. Stewart: Drains have been cleaned on Cemetery Road. Grading has been carried out on Lee’s, Kowhai and Rakehou Roads. Waitohi: Grading has been carried out cn Taipo-Awahuri, Banks-\\ aitolii anil ’laipo Roads. Drains have been cleaned out on Hammond’s and Rowe’s Roads. Carnarvon : Grading lias been carried out in Pukipitki, Lake, Koputaru, Rivcrbank and Rositni Roads. Clay is being spread on a portion of Flaxmore Road. Rongotea: Drains and culverts have been cleaned out on Jones’, Bank’s, Tompkins’, McLean’s and Milner’s roads. Grading lias been carried out on Banks’, Mill, Tompkins’, Jones’, Green and Milner’s roads. Kawa Kawa: Drains and culverts have been cleaned 011 the southern portion of Ivellow’s Road, and little surface metal has been spread. Pyke’s Road has been similarly treated and the ruts on tho old metalled portion have been filled with pit metal. Cooper’s and Milners roads have been graded. Awahou: Motuiti Road lias been trimmed up and metal has been spread in the wheel ruts for a short distance. Approximately a mile of Spring s Road has been ploughed, disced and graded up. Cameron’s Road has been similarly treated and protection work has been carried out to the river bank in this locality. Karikari Road will be graded up within the next week or so. General: The lire buckets have been painted and the notice boards are now being written for the main county bridges. Tenders have been called for maintenance metal for several county roads. —Adopted. INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

The county inspector (Air W. Berry) mado tho following report:. In connection witli gorse, lupins und blackbciry giovwng oil county roads, notices have been sent lo occupiers of property where this nuisance is prevalent, and in cases where the notices have not been complied with I have called upon the owners and informed them that the council has instructed mo to tuko action against them. Since my call I notice that most have been busy clearing their road frontages. Two persons wero summoned for breaches of the motor regulations at Fcilding Court and one was fined £2O and costs, tho other case being adjourned. Pudding permits to the value of £2546 were applied for, and fees amounting to £5 5s were colleoted. Fines under tho motor regulations wero £2O. —Adopted. RATE ROLL ALTERATIONS. The following alterations were mado to the county rate roll:—F. W. Koberstem to H. A. Bowen, lot 5, pt. soc. 149, Sandon township; Morgan Smyth to J. S. Cameron, lot 2, pt. secs. 90/1 Aloutoa Block, and pt. lot 704, block XI., Mt. Robinson; C. J. and J. A. Florence to C. J. Florence, pt. soc. 59, Carnarvon; C. E. Gore to Miss Lottie Gore, sej. 74, Tangimoana.
