CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. THE UNEMPLOYMENT REPORT. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, Mr M. H. Oram presiding. Others present were Messrs J. A. Naeh, M.P., M. A. Eliott, W. Devine, W. Deem, W. H. Brown, It. A. Noedl, A. P. Stuart, A. Shelton, J. J. O’Shea, W. E. Winks, J. H Stevens and G. L. McGregor. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce advised that it had received the report of the sub-committee of the Palmerston North Chamber on the unemployment report of the Government committee. The secretary stated that lie was directed by the acting-chairman of hi 3 chamber’s economic committee, which had recently issued a bulletin on the same subject, to express the opinion that the contribution made by tho Palmerston North Chamber to the admittedly complex problem was one of which it had every reason to be proud. It would appear that, while the problem was by no means solved, it was being faced and examined by the commercial section of the community, and that could not fail to have far-reaching and beneficial results. The chairman commented that the reply was very gratifying and the report which had previously been held over’ for consideration, was adopted. CUSTOMS OFFICE FACILITIES. Advice was received that the hours of attendance by the Customs officer at the Chief Post Office had been altered from 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 and 3.3 Uto 4.30 p.m. to 11 a.m. to *. p - m ”, making an attendance of two hours continuously in place of one hour m the morning and one hour in the after noon. The Chief Postmaster said he had communicated with the majoiity business firms in Palmerston North who were interested, and they had agreed with the change. Fresh accommodation, stated tne Postmaster, had been provided for the clearance of Customs parcels; entrance to the room was now obtained from the private box lobby of the Post Office. The general public would not now be required to go around to the back of the Post Office as previously. Tlie chairman commented that the new departure would be much appreciated by all.

GENERAL. The Feilding Borough Council advised that the Mayor and Cr. Collins had been appointed its representatives to attend a meeting to-> arrange an air port for the district.. The British (U.K.) Manufacturers Association of New Zealand wrote suggesting that in view of the success which had recently attended the grand tour of motor vehicles, branches of tho organisation should be formed at Palmerston North and other centres. The letter was held over pending a report by the chairman.
