CRICKET OVERSEAS.
YORKSHIRE MATCH ABANDONED. LONDON, May 13. Prolonged rain at Sheffield prevented play in the cricket match between the Australians and Yorkshire, play being resumed, and the game has oeen abandoned. The following eleven were invited to represent M.G.G. against Australia on May 17: Chapman (captain), Jardine, Duleepsinhji, Alien, Allom, White, Peebles, Franklin (wicketkeeper), Wyatt, Hearne and Hendren. Owing to withdrawals Jupp and Stevens replace White and Wyatt. Chapman’s selection .as captain does not find unanimous approval among critics, who foresee in it a selection as test captain. Lord Harris was asked whether in the event of an amateur being unfitted for the captaincy by virtue of his playing form he would counsel a professional. Lord Harris replied: “In that inconceivable contingency, of course, a professional would be captain.” WIDER WICKET. . VICTORIA’S APPEAL. Received May -14, 10.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, May 13. The Victorian Cricket Association has approved of the wider wicket proposal. The wider wicket will likely le used in all Sheffield Shield matches next season.
