SUPERTAX ON LAND.
HARDSHIP INVESTIGATIONS COMPLETED. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, May 14. The Commission appointed to investigate appeals by landowners against the special supertax on land on the ground of hardship has completed its inquiries and is now framing the final report. The commission comprises Mr W. G. Riddell, ex-S.M., who is chairman, and Messrs D. G. Clark, representing tho Government, and A. E. Fowler, representing tho farming community. The last two members are former Commissioners of Taxes. The commission was first required to report by February 21, but the hearing of 585 appeals necessitated taking a considerable amount of evidence, especially in Canterbury, where the great majority of cases originated. It has previously been indicated that remissions totalling about £IOO,OOO have been recommended and approved of by tho taxing department, and that the special land tax brought in about £250,000 additional revenue.
