DUELLING IN GERMANY
PROHIBITING REGULATION. The special correspondent of the London Times at Berlin states that the German Surgery Society has protested against the inclusion of a clause in the penal code prohibiting students from ' duelling, on the following grounds: (1) The sword is not a lethal weapon if proper bandores are used and duo precautions are taken; (2) duelling is really a fighting sport, not a fight; (3) sword wounds are far more harmless than blows with the fist, as boxing deaths prove, whereas nearly all duelling deaths are duo to indirect causes like blood poisoning. Consequently it is contended that the Legislature would display partiality in forbidding duelling unless it also prohibited the employment of the dangerous gloved fist. The society adds: “Boxing panders to degraded purposes like sensationalism and profit-making, whereas duelling only cultivates courage.”
