HOME-MADE ’PLANE.
COMPLETELY WRECKED. PILOT ESCAPES. Per Press Association. ROTORUA, May 12. The aeroplane Mr I. Alison, of Whakatane, constructed crashed yesterday at Rotorua. The first flight, with a minimum load, was successful. On the second trial flight, with a capacity load, the ’plane just cleared the ground fences. Continuing across the main Whakatane road, Mr Alison found that he was unable to rise. While attempting to land in a paddock a wing of the ’plane touched a ti-tree, tilting the machine and spinning it round. The pilot was flung into the scrub, but was not hurt. The machine dived into a small creek, and was completely smashed. A huge number of spectators had gathered to witness the trial. They were greatly relieved when the news came back that the pilot was safe.
