ANGRY DRIVER.
WHIPPED TRAFFIC INSPECTOR. WELLINGTON, May 10. . On a recent Saturday morning Dennis Mulhane, a farmer, of Karori, refused to pull up in his horse-drawn trap at the corner of Taranaki and Manners Streets at the dictate of "the traffic inspector. When the inspector grabbed the reins Mulhane belaboured him with his whip, and lie was finally driven to the police station in his own trap. There was a sequel in the Police Court yesterday, when Mulhane appeared before Mr E. Page, S.M., on charges of striking tho inspector and of refusing to obey his signal. “I had no more intention 'of striking him that I have of striking this Book,” said accused, holding up i Bible in the witness-box. He said that he was driving an old white horse he used on the farm. He had an appointment, and he admitted that he was annoyed at being made to stop. “I think that this action of driving against the inspector was deliberate, ’ the Magistrate said. “A man who does that is a hindrance to the proper control of traffic, and also a danger.” Accused was fined £5, with costs, for disobeying • the signal, being convicted and ordered to pay the costs on the other charge.
