DEFEAT IN CONGRESS.

SETBACK FOR MR HOOVER. WASHINGTON, May 9. President Hoover suffered his first major defeat in Congress to-day, when the Senate, by a vote of 39 to 41, rejected the nomination of Judge John Parker, the North Carolina jurist, for a Justice of the United States Supreme Court. It was the first rejection of such a nominee in 36 years, and was due chiefly to the bitter opposition of organised Labour and negro organisations. John Johnston Parker practised law in Charlotte, North Carolina, until appointed a Judge of the United States Circuit Court in 1925. In 1910 he became Republican candidate for Congress, and seven, years later received endorsement as his party’s candidate for Governor. In 1924 he was delegate-at-large to the Republican convention at which Mr Coolidge was nominated.
