TERRIBLE MASSACRE
CHINESE BANDITS ACTIVE. HUGE AREA LAID WASTE. THOUSANDS KILLED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 10, 11.0 a.m. SHANGHAI, May 9. The Government authorities at Kaifeng, capital of the Honan province, report that a terrible massacre occurred in the Yungyang district on April 23. A large horde of bandits looted every village, leaving desolation, rapine and murder in their wake. An area of 250 miles square was completely laid Waste. Nine thousand houses were burned to the ground. Fifteen thousand people were killed, or carried off for ransom. Magistrates and officials were tortured horribly, and killed.
