JEWELLER’S WINDOW SMASHED.
TWO ARRESTS MADE. The plate glass window containing jewellery valued at over £IOO at the premises of Mr Thomas Ireton in Cuba Street was smashed at an early hour this morning. A passerby notified the police of the incident and Constables Compton and Thomassen proceeded to investigate it. Subsequently they apprehended two men. It is understood that a beer bottle wa3 used to smash the window. Mr Ireton was informed at 1.30 a.m. c-f the episode, and immediately proceeded, to the premises to remove his stock from the broken window. He found that nothing was missing, but some of the contents were damaged. Charged with breaking and entering by night the premises of Thomas Ireton in Palmerston North at 1.20 a.m. to-day, Thomas Melrose, a labourer, aged 19, and Nelson Watts, aged 25, a Californian by birth, appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., this morning. On the application of Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse, they were remanded to appear again on Wednesday, May 14.
