HUGE DEATH ROLL
BURMA EARTHQUAKE. MANY BODIES IN DEBRIS. PEGU FIRE DIES OUT. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 10, 11.50 a.m. DELHI, May 9. Deaths in hospital and the discovery of many more bodies under the debris have brought the Pegu death roll to over one thousand. One-third of the buildings have been destroyed. The report that the island of Thongwa disappeared, with 12,000 inhabitants, is now known to be not true, but the island is a strange sight. The ground is broken by craters, mud and sand, from which -water spouts, and the river bed, which before the earthquako was almost dry, is now flooded. The fire which was raging in Pegu has now died out. Steps are being taken to lay out a temporary village.
