FOXTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent) FOXTON, May 9.

The Fioxton Surf and Lite Saving Cun. is steadily pushing on with the raising o; the necessary funUs with which to erect a club house at Foxton beach. Although the season as far as surf patrol work is non at an end, the committee is still as active as ever. To keep members fit and interesteo in tho club a football club has been formed and Wednesday matches are indulged i.i. The team paid its first visit to Bulls on Wednesday when it succeeded in defeating tho homo fifteen by eleven points to nit. It is regretted that Stevenson sustained the injury he did in the PakeliaMuori match on Wednesday as his absence from the ranks of the local seniors will be severely felt, Even on Wednesday the backs did not seem to have the same pep after ho left tho fild. Tho nature ot liis injury will possibly preclude him from playing for the best part of the season. Arising out of trouble during the third grado game in Foxton last Saturday, u local player who was ordered off the field was suspended at the management oo:n----mitteo meeting on Tuesday evening until he appears betoro the meeting. The management committee of the Horowhenua Rugby Council this week dealt with a complaint from the referee, Mr Holdsworth, in connection with tho ordering" off of a Fioxton player during the progress of . the Foxton-Shannon junior match last Saturday. Mr Holdsworth told the meeting that ho warned the two teams against rough play at the beginning of the game, but shortly after play commenced in the second spell he had to order Croon off for allegedly striking a playe.after being fairly tackled. Croon said that he did not strike the other player. After ho took tho ball and punted it the other player charged him and he fended him off. Croon was suspended for one playing Saturday and warned that the committee would not take a lenient view of a second offence.

At its next meeting tho Foxton Borough Council will have to consider a request from tho district engineer of tho Public Works Department for the payment of £BSO, tho council’s proportion of the cost of tho Shannon bridge erected over the Manawatu River at Moutoa to replace the structure destroyed by flood some years ago. Tho total amount recoverable from local bodies in this connection is £12,903 9s 6d. The bridge and its approaches cost £24,135 16s 4d and tho Highways Board subsidy amounts to £13,916 4s lOd. This leaves £10,219 11s 6d, the difference between which and tho sum of £12,903 9s 6d represents tho local bodies’ share of the road approaches, land surveys and compensation for land taken. The amount of the bridge contract was £20,335 15s 3d. At the last meeting of the foxton Chamber of Commerce tho question of community lighting was discussed and it was decided to communicate with the Power Board and ascertain the cost and details. On Wednesday Mr Smith, tho Horowhenua Power Board’s engineer, visited Foxton and conferred with members of the Chamber of Commerce. Thoso present were Messrs J. K. Hornblow (president), D. Christie, G. F. Smith, S. Matter, I. Corn, Wm. Trueman. Mr Smith said the ehop fronts could be illuminated either with one or two lights or in a group. The cost would be £3 12s per light per year, with a reduction for more than thre lights, and a further reduction if paid in advance. Tho service included maintenance and installation. The lights which brilliantly illuminated tho window displays were kept going every night including Sundays and holidays up till about midnight. The lamps were of 200 c.p. enclosed in globes and were in proper alignment and uniform. On the motion of Mr Christie, Mr Smith was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The final game for the Thomson trophies was played on the local green on Wednesday afternoon between Trueman and Thomson (skip) and Aitchison and Walker (skip). The result was a win for Trueman and Thomson by 26 points fio 13.
