RANGITIKEI

(From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, April 12. Mr K. W. Dalrymplo, chairman of the RaugitikeL County Council, has returned from a wapiti hunting trip in Southland. The opinion was expressed at the meeting of tue Kangitikei County Council by Cr Stuart, who is the prospective Reform candidate for Rangitikei, that ere estates are cut* up for sale provision should be made for local bodies to have power to see that proper roading schemes are carried out by the vendor who, in the majority of cases, was more ablo to do the work than the purchaser. An amendment of the pro-, sent legislation would be required for this purpose. The matter arose out of an application before the council.

A profit of £l5O was derived by the Taihapo amateur players from their presentation of the revue, “Reveille” last week. A motor-lorry driven by Mr J. Jelly man, of Marton, collided with a tramcar at a Wanganui street intersection yesterday. The lorry passed in front and was heavily struck, causing it to capsize. No one was hurt, although the passengers in the tram were severely shaken. The lorry was considerably damaged but the tram was only slightly affected. A serious head-on collision occurred at Silverhope between a car driven by Mr R. Dukeson and another driven by an employee of Messrs Stewart Bros., Wanganui. Mr Dukeson was endeavouring to pass a third car and failed to do so in time to avoid an impact with Stewart Bros.’ vehicle which was sent hurtling down a bank and was badly damaged. Mr Dukeson, who is foreman for tho Rangitikei County Council, sustained head injuries and is confined to bed, and his car was also considerably damaged. I Tho first hockey match of the season was played at Marton Park yesterday between local representatives and a Dannovirko team of ladies from tho Mangatera Club The score was one-all, Miss M. Thomson scoring for the visitors and Miss Staples for the home side. •

No fewer than 38 playing members were present at a meeting of tho Marton Old Boys’ Football Club last night at which arrangements were made for tho new season. Mr C. Hammond was appointed club captain, Mr H. Nuttall coach of the forwards, and Mr F. Love coach of the backs. The Rangitikei Rugby Union met last evening, Mr J. R. Lloyd Hammond presiding. The classification sub-committee agreed to allow three senior players—L. McLean (Old Boys), M. Downs (Ohingaiti) and 0. Stevens (Athletic) to bo reinstated as juniors. The application of W. Smith (Athletic) was refused. It was 'decided to procure estimates of the cost of stretchers and first-aid outfits for use if necessary during matches, and clubs are to be asked to provide first-aid men. It was reported that all the grounds arc in firstclass order. A substantial profit is likely to ensue from tho year’s working of tho Rangitikei County Council’s metal-crushing plant on tho banks of the Rangitikei River at Kakariki, a venture which was prematurely condemned by a section of tho ratepayers when it was mooted. In fact, the progress of the plant has been so good that, as ono councillor remarked to-day, the council may soon be getting its own metal for nothing. The Rangitikei County Council is to hold a special meeting on the 24th inst. for tho purpose of dculing with the proposed improvement of the main highways, especially tho tar-sealing of tho road from Bulls to Wangaehu. At Ngaurekehu on Easter Monday a cricket match will be played between a team captained by H. M. AlcGirr, of Wellington, and a luihape XI. The Marton horseman, B. H. Morris, is at present second on the list of winning jockeys, having 47 wins to his credit. H. Gray has 48 and H. Goldfinch 46. A number of Kangitikei farmers attended a farewell dinner, given in honour of Air C. G. Ross, who is retiring from the service of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., after a longtny career, at Wanganui rust night. Mr Koss is weil-known in this district. A presentation of an entree dish was niado, Mr W. S. Glenn proposing the toast of the guest of the evening. An offer by Air J. Milne of land at £35 per acre at tho site of the bride at Riddilord’s on the Marton-Bulls Road was accepted by the Rangitikei County Council to-day. Tho area will be used as a metal pit. . . . Miss E. Marshall, of Marton, is visiting Wanganui. Mrs N. Tankersley, of Alarton, has been visiting Tuihape. > Airs A. Crooke and Aliss Betty Crooke, of Marton, are guests at Alarsland View, New Plymouth. Air W. Henson has been appointed secretary of the Taihape Fire Board. Rev. T. A. Brady, Methodist minister at Taihape, was farcwelled by his congregation on leaving to take charge of tho Gon.ville circuit. On Wednesday the wedding was celebrated at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Marton, by Rev. D. Alclvor, of Gwendoline, youngest daughter of Air and Mrs C. W. Hoffman, of Marton, and Frederick Francis, youngest son of Air. and the late Airs W. Neville, of Foxton. Tho bride,’ who was given away by her father, wore _ a picturesque frock of ivory georgette with lace trimmings. Her embroidered veil was caught with a coronet of orange blossom. The muid of honour, Aliss Bessie Hoffman, sister of the bride, wore a frock of powder blue georgette and a hat to tone. The bride’s bouquet was of cream roses and asters and fern, and the maid of honour s of apricot roses, both being the gift of Mrs Smith, of Afarton. Air R. Chaffey, of Foxton was best man.
