MANAWATU REFEREES MEET. PREPARINgTfOR SEASON. Matters relating to the - control of games Avere freely discussed at the initial meeting for the year of the ManaAvatu Rugby Referees’ Association which Avas held last evening. Mr C. W. White presided over an attendance of 17 members. Reporting on the examinations conducted last season, tho chairman announced that the results had been most unsatisfactory. . The papers had been completed and forwarded to the controlling authorities, only to be mislaid. Waikato and Manawatu referees had sat for the examination, but only the former results were available. Mr A. W. Thompson was authorised to intervieAV the authorities on the question. A brief Avelcome Avas accorded Mr Robinson, an ex-member of the association, who has noAV returned to the Manawatu to carry the whistle, and to Mr Dudson, an Auckland referee and a member of the management committee in the Queen City, who is temporarily stationed in Palmerston North and has offered hie services as a referee. Mr Holman, of Feilding, avqs elected a member of the association, while Mr Higgio was re-elected. It Avas stated that classification of referees had been decided upon at the conclusion of last season, and that the list Avould ho reviewed shortly. Advice Avas received that, at a meeting of roferees held at Kimbolton last March, it had been decided'to form an association for Oroua Sub-Union referees. When the matter of affiliation had been broqched, it Avas undecided as to which course to pursue. It had, therefore, been decided to inquire Avhether it Avould bo possible to ■form a sub-association under Manawutu. It had been suggested that, if a deputation could attend the Palmerston North meeting, a clearer understanding Avould be reached. The chairman explained that the general feeling of tne New Zealand Association Avas to delete ns many ot the smaller bodies as possible. Amalgamation had been suggested, but personally he Avas not in favour of this scheme, as it meant that the major associations had all the poAA’er at the annual meeting, to tho exclusion of the minor ones. Should the remit from the Canterbury Association to be presented at the approaching conference be passed, it Avould signul the out-voting ot the smaller organisations. In regard to the inquiry from Oroua, he added, ManaAvatu would surely welcome deputations from that area. It would be pleasing to take the members in, but it Avould bo better to see a separate association formed as only ten members Avere required to affiliate with the parent body. • . . Mr Thompson expressed the opinion that it would be more encouraging to alloAV the country members to attend the meeting in Palmerston North, in order to alloAV them to obtain the benefit from the experienced referees. It Avas eventually resolved to request delegates to attend the next meeting on April 24.
