BREEZE AT MEETING.

DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL. MEMBER’S STRAIGHT SPEAKING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, April 10. There was a feeling of tension during the meeting of the Rangitikei County Council this alternoon when a deputation representing tho Wanganui and District Development League and the Wanganui Automobile Association waited upon the council with a request that it tar seal the main highways from Bulls to Wangaehu and from Turakina to Marton. After various speakers had outlined the objects of tho deputation, which was led by Mr John Morrison, Cr. A. Stuart bluntly told them that the roads were not so bad as they were made out to be and in his opinion the deputation was out to get more business into Wanganui from the Rangitikei district and was not looking at the matter of better roadingi from a national point of view. Many of the settlers in the back country had not even metal on their roads and he thought Mr Morrison had little to complain of regarding the looso metal on the main highways referred to. Cr. Stuart said he was of the opinion that tho deputation was only concerned with the interests of Wanganui and its time could have been better employed than in coming to Marton that day. When the Wanganui roads were bad the people of Rangitikei did not send deputations or write letters to the Wanganui council. Air Morrison, in reply, said he had never before been so insulted as a member of a deputation and ho was surprised that the chairman (Cr. K. W. Dalrymple) had allowed the alleged insult to be made. The chairman said he did not think Cr. Stuart’s remarks were meant as an insult, they were only his way of “calling a spade a spade.” , The deputation then withdrew, Mr Morrison and Cr. Stuart exchanging “compliments” across the room. The council is investigating the financial position regarding the highways concerned.
