Lord and Lady Bledisloe arrived at Dunedin yesterday afternoon and were accorded a civic reception in the evening, when the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall was packed. The Mayor, Mr R. S. Black, read an address of welcome, and His Excellency, in reply, assured the audience that-he and Lady Bledisloe would do all that lay in their power to understand the desires and needs of the people. The reception accorded the visitors was of the heartiest possible nature. The death occurred at Hamilton yesterday of Mr John McCaw, aged 80. The deceased gentleman was prominent in local 1 body affairs. Mr F. J. Mohr, of Thorndon, has been appointed to the position on the clerical staff at the Palmerston North railway station rendered vacant by the transfer to Taumarunui of Mr- 11. C. McCartie. The appointment of Miss Aleria Page, M.A., and of Mr J. Standish as part-time relieving teachers at the Palmerston North Technical. School was approved at last evening’s meeting of the committee. • A London cable message states that. Sir Thomas Royden announced his resignation as chairman of - the Cunard Company, which position he has held since 1922, at the annual meeting of the company in Liverpool. Pressure of personal affairs was the reason, he said. He will continue to be a director. He is succeeded by Sir Percy Bates, deputy chairman.
