(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, April 7. -Two further cases of diphtheria have been sent from Otaki to the Palmerston North Hospital, An endeavour is to be made to form a dramatic club in Otaki. Light but .very welcome rain fell in Otaki and district yesterday and to-day. A heavier downlall, however, is needed. Messrs T. O’Rourke and P. H. Harper are at present bn holiday in Rotorua. Air F. Mann, at. ono time in busmens in Otaki, but now of Feilding, is at present on holiday in this district. -Mr Edward Furse, ol Otaki Railway, on Alonday entered the Palmerston -North Hospital for X-ray examination. Mr P. H. Rhodos, who has been in ;he Palmerston North Hospital tor some time, expects to leave the institution within a fortnight’s time. Air J. Ayre is progressing slowly. Air H. J. Pearec, postmaster, is at present on holiday, having left with Airs Pearso this morning for Napier. Air H. E. Baughan is acting as postmaster. . _ The death occurred at Waikanae on Sunday morning of Wiki Edwin, uftcr a long illness. The funeral, conducted by Rev. Tokoaitua Temuera, took place on Tuesday afternoon. The friends of Air L. B. Dawson, of Levin, who underwent an operation in a private hospital in Palmerston North on Thursday, will be pleased to learn that his condition yesterday showed much improvement; and it is hoped that he will be abio to leave the institution within a fortnight. A lorry, driven by Air John Henry Aletzenthin, of Paraparaumu, and a car driven by Air Lionel Deacon, of Tailiapc, collided at Rauniati on Alonday with disastrous results to the car, while Mrs Deacon, who accompanied her burp and, was badly cut about the face and - had to receive medical attention. It appeurs that Mr Aletzenthin m driving to the gravel pit at Raumati and had just reached the bitumen when the car came along and a collision occurred. It is feared that two of Air Deacon’s ribs are broken, while both he and Airs Deacon are suffering from shock. They were conveyed to a private hospital in Wellington, while tho car is under repair at a Paraparaumu garage. The lorry wus not damaged. . At the monthly meeting of tho Otaki State School Committee Air H. Nicolson was in the chair. The matter of ground improvement was again considered and it was- urged that it should receive urgent alien lion, and tho secretary was instructed to get into communication with tho board with a view of having the work started. The Education Board wrote stating that it had been informed that a proposal was to be presented for the establishment of a secondary ac-parti-clit :nd fac'.-: were asked for. A later letter stated that there was “abfio'utely-no char.cc of a high school be ing established, especially in advance of Levin which had over 140 on the roll. ’ However, as the • cookery room was only occupied once a week tho board thought the committee might arrange for the accoiim oJai'Cn of a secondary department if established. It was pointed out by the secretary that 45 applications had already been received from parents who were willing to support a high school* at Otaki, and that manv more we -- .- expected. The matter wiw left in file hands of Dr Milne and Mr Barlow to attend to. Mr Dempsey stated that he had been in communication with the . Herbert . Smith Trust, as desired, and had received four small cupo which he suggested should be allotted for football, cricket, tennis and basket ball.--It was decided to write and thank the trust for their generosity, and have the cup© engraved
