COLLEGE ST. SCHOOL

REPORT OF COMMITTEE. Tho report of th© College S School Committee for the year en March 31 is as follows: —“The \ issue upon our taking up office wa : , definitely seal.the labours of past < 0! mittees and make possible the rcnli , tion of their dreams, a new 501i,.,,] building. We are pleased to say tl ;,; this has been accomplished and ii„, way is open for continued effort u, make possible the full new block , i buildings aimed for. The year h»? been a very busy one, both ladies’ and men’s committees putting in their share of toil. The financial report, clearly shows the efforts that have been made to raise -additional moneys to meet the increased expenditure necessary in laying out the new school grounds and preparing the way for .ho erection of tne new school. In tins connection we are again indebted to the ladies for their splendid co-0p.,, tion. and especially we thank Mrs A W. McDonnell ’for having arranged t« , very successful concerts, using the talent so happily available amongst tho children of the school. Also, wo are indebted to tho ladies for their garden party effort in December when (although the weather was unkind to us> we were fortunate to reach the sum ot £49 12s 4d. ' . “The children’s ball held Jn July was a very successful function. His Worship the. Mayor, Mr A. J. Grab, with Mrs Gfaham, set the ball rolh - and the children,• beautifully dreaied a galaxy of colours, had a very nappy time and were entertained by the ladies’ committee, under the direction of Mrs A. J. Hunt, to a tasty suppci and ice cream. We would express our thanks to/the ■ parents for their goodness in going to the trouble many must have done in order to dress their children so well .and appropriately. The nett result financially of the ball was £35 17s fid. The children’s picnic was held in the gardens at the Esplanade early in March, the children being favoured with beautiful weather. We desire to record our sincere appreciation ofdhe headmaster and his staff who undertook the management of the sports and games programme in a very businesslike manner. Members < f the committees who could get time off also-helped to make the children’s day a happy one. “With the one desire of having the new school erected at the earliest possible date, your committee did not deem it wise to spend much in maintenance of the old school .building. It is so evident that the old school lias outlived its usefulness, and further moneys spent on it would be wasted. A general oversight, however, hag' been kept and urgent needs attended to. With the occupation of tho new school the familiar bungalow was vacated, but the board has now reconditioned this building, painted it both inside and out, and it now houses the special class of children who will receive specialised instruction. A specially installed steam heating plant will ensure tho children's comfort during the cold days of winter. THE NEW SCHOOL. “Your committee’s efforts duringfthe year to have a new school erected are now manifest in the fine building across tho way, which now houses the junior classes up to and. including Standard I. This structure is a permanent tribute to the board’s architect, Mr E. R. Hodge, and his loyal cm idsmen. There is goodwill built in with each part of the structure. We aie proud of their work, and thank the Wanganui Education Board and its staff for tho very fine manner in which they have done their part to help us. A low concrete wall has .yet to be erected as a division between I the* footpath'arid the school grounds and'upon its completion the work of laying out lawns and gardens will be undertaken. Tho playing area at the back of the school (upon drainage being completed) will be a boon to all the pupils. It has been the intention of your committee to persevere fdth the object of securing a full new school, and we trust that the incoming committee will retain and increase' the advantages gained. The wav is clear.

“Your committee was privileged to cooperate with the other school committees of this district in helping to make the health- camp possible for the upbuilding of the chifdren during their several .weeks’ stay at Awapuni. The very laudable object of establishing a central dental- clinic .in Palmerston North, to care for the dental needs of the children of this town and district, has also claimed our attention, and we look forward to the fruition of tl>» efforts now being formulated, and we bespeak the hearty co-operation of all householders throughout the district to this end. In this connection Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., has given his whole-heart-ed and active support, and we would thank him for his invaluable help. In conclusion, your committee wishes to record its appreciation of the loyal cooperation of the headmaster and his staff. These ladies and gentlemen have worked in fullest harmony with tho committee, and we just hope that in some measure we, as a committee, have •helped to make their work more pleasant.. This report would be incomplete without reference being made to tne committee itself ere it finishes its work. Each man has done what he could to carry his share of the burden, and whilst it would bo out of place to mention the names of all or these happy toilers yet we all agree that Mr P. W. Barnard, our energetic secretary and treasu»fer, has borne his share of the work in a very efficient and businesslike manner, and has had wealth of detail to attend to during the past year of construction. We would like Mr Barnard to know that his labours are appreciated. To our custodian, Mr Sandford, we also tender our warm thanks for his loyal services; also io Mr W. Hunter, - our auditor, who has also been a warm friend to the school, always ready to help freely with whatever service he ertm give.' Your committee vacates office trusting that their efforts of the past year will merit your approval.”

Mr E. S. Oliver, of Union Street, is one of the nineteen seeking election to the College Strdet School Committee. Through a typographical error has name appeared as C. S. Oliver in the list published in Tuesday’s issue.
