OBITUARY.

MR MICHAEL SIMPSON. A well-known and highly respected resident of Motueka-. Nelson, in the person.of Mr Michael Simpson, passed away at his residence, Pah Street, on 26th March. Mr Simpson, who had reached the age of 75, had suffered indifferent health during the past two years. He was born in Lancashire, England, in 1’854 and in 1856 came with liis . parents,. Mr and Mrs John Simpson, to New Zealand in the ship Creswell, landing at Manuka Bush. The family took up their residence in Motueka and followed farming pursuits successfully. Mr Simpson married Phyllis Talbot in J 877 and of the marriage there - were ten children— Messrs Donald, Motueka; David, South Africa; Grayden, Wellington; Vernon, New Plymouth; and Mesdames W. Hall, Lower Hutt; J. Atkins, Richmond; R. Reay, Palmerston North; B. Brown, Sydney; J. Martin, Tasman; and A. Cooksley, Dunedin. There are thirty grandchildren and fourteen great-grancliildren. In his young dAys, Mr Simpson was keenly interested in sports, and was an athlete of some standing in tho district. For many years lie took an active part in. local affairs, being a councillor for twelve years (1900-1912) and later represented the borough as Mayor during 1912-1916, when lie resigned owing to ill-health. He was a member of the Oddfellows, M.U. Lodge. Tho sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to his widow 'and family.
