BLAZE AT DANNEVIRKE.
EARLY MORNING OUTBREAK. LOSS TO BUSINESS PEOPLE. Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, April 9. There was an outbreak of fire shortly before one o’clock this morning, wooden premises in the centre of the business area, known as the Cosmopolitan Building, owned by Mr Leo Stein and occupied bv several tenants, being badly gutted at the back. The loss to the occupants of the premises on the ground floor by smoke and water is estimated .to run into a substantial figureThe fire apparently started downstairs and the flames ran up to the roof, the. brigade being occupied for the best part of an hour before the outbreak was under control. Fortunately, the night was calm, otherwise there yotild have been a disastrous conflagration. The occupants affected and the insurances are: Miss Dillon, milliner, stock and fittings, £227; A. Hannan and Co., ladies’ outfitters stock, £500; R. L, Bartleet and Co.; boot importers, stock, £1250, furniture and effects, £250; Hendry and Co. confectioners, stock, £550; W. Chick, dentist, fittings, £400; George Peters, tobacconist and hairdresser, amount unknown ; SVatson and Sinclair, drapers, in whose promises the outbreak is thought to have originated, stock, £1100; Miss McPhair dreasmaker t no insurance. The building was insured for £6OOO.
MANSE DESTROYED.
MINISTER HAS NARROW ESCAPE. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, April 9. Tho Presbyterian Manse at Kaitarigata was completely destroyed ly firo early this morning. Rev. Frank McDonald, the only occupant, barely had time to snatch a few clothes and escape. Mr McDonald’s wife recently died while on holiday in Christchurch, and after hie holiday his health broke down and he bnly resumed teaching last Sunday. He lost everything, including a large and valuable collection of books. The furniture was all new.
