LAWN TENNIS

PALMERSTON NORTH CLUB. The final'of the ladies’ championship of the Palmerston North Lawn' Tennis t luh was played on Saturday between Misses N. Astle and D. Haggitt and after a long match was won by Miss Astle, who thu-. becomes the club champion for the sccoini year in succession. Miss ABtle started by winning the first three games and the score was called 6 —2 in .her favour. Miss Haggitt then took three games in succes sion but Miss Astle managed to secure the next and the set at 6-5. The. second sc was more even up to 3 all. Miss Haggitt then won the next three and the sot at 6—3. The score in the third set was called 3-2 in Miss Haggitt’s favour Miss Astle winning the next four for the set, match and- championship. . , Miss Astle deserved to win. for she showed more enterprise, and her placing was distinctly the better. But it was a dreary watch for a championship final, consisting of uninteresting rallies of great length, high trajectory and "low speed. Miss tiaggitit is right ’out of form at present and is hardly recognisable as the player who three years ago in top place for the Manawatu Association won- all her matches against the very strong Wanganui oppositloAt the same timo Boddy and Brown were playing to decide who should join McDonald and Hankin in the last three tor the men’s championship. The first set was keenly contested, Brown winning at B—6. In the second set the pace fell off a bit and Boddy, doing well at the net, won at 7—5. After an interval both came out for the third, set very lame, There was ■ not much difference between them in this respect, but Boddy, who relies on getting possession at the. net, was' too slow to get there in time to intercept Browne hard returns from the baseline, so that Brown had things all his own way and won 6—l. This reverses the result of their previous meeting ,when. Boddy won "by 2 seta to 1.
