RACING NEWS.

' (By “Binocular.”) The Australian Sun gelding Glare was shipped to his new owner in Sydney by the Ulimaroa on Friday. - Tre grey gelding Palmares, six years, offered on behalf ot the . estate of the late Mr H. Friedlander, was sold at auction at Whangarei to Mr H. Buckley, of Whangarei, at 25 guineas. J. M. Cameron also left with Goshawk and Merry Mint. Cimabuo and Habit went in charge of W_ Mirks. Habit will be handed over to one of the Sydney trainers on arrival, probably George Price. A. E. Downing, fiormerly of Hawera, who rode with success a few seasons ago, has returned to .New Zealand and has taken up his residence with E. J. Murtagh at Trentham. Downing is putting in for his license again and will take First Money to Tauherenikau while Murtagh is at Feiiding. H. Nurse has never hurried Rapine’s sister, Rapina, but she is booked to make her first appearance at the Hororata meetin,; next Saturday. Owned by Mr H. M. Reeves, of the Hororata Stud, she was purchased more with the idea of being the makings of a good brood mare than with the idea of racing her, and she has developed from a rather weedy filly into a good sort, and a quality-looking mare. She is not big, but she is a nice mover, with a good turn of speed. W. G. Hobbs has just taken in hand at yßiccarton a couple of youngsters for Mr G. Gould. One of them is a two-year-old gelding by Paladin from Wink, by Winkle from Judith, and the other is a yearling gelding by Jericho from Palestrina. The future of the latter yearling will bo followed with a good deal of interest as he represents a daring experiment in breeding, Jericho (by Archery) and Palestrina (by Clarenceux) both claim the same dam, Judith, by Martian from Hebrew Maid. LIMERICK TO RESUME. MAY RACE IN SPRING. F. D. Jones intends to make another start on Limerick (says a Christchurch correspondent). The champion has been on the retired list for nearly six months. When started on his spell he was fired and blistered, and for some time past he has been running out in a paddock at his trainer’s quarters at Riccarton. The leg that caused his retirement has improved wonderfully, and Jones is hopelul that the brilliant Limond gelding will, stand another preparation. He will be kept tx> . t easy tasks in the meantime, the idea being to have him ready to race in the spring, provided he remains sound. GREAT GELDINGS. GLOAMING, LIMERICK, AMOUNIS. In the course of an interesting article on great geldings that have figured on the Australian turf, the Australasian remarks“ Gloaming, who is at the head of the list of winners. with £43,100, is a gelding. When Gloaming was Bold as a yearling many of the ringside experts passed him because they did not altogether approve of his joints. There, however, could not have been much amiss with them, otherwise he would not have raced for so many seasons. His .astute trainer evidently believed that he had a better chance of standing the wear and tear of racing as a gelding than as an entire. Gloaming must bv regarded as the best gelding seen on the Australian and New Zealand turf, but there was not a great margin between him and Limerick and Amounis, two other great geldings who arc now close to him in the list of great 'stake-winners. Limerick is in third place with £37,971 and Amounis follows closely with £37,796. The finest individual of the trio is Amounis, who is a powerful, truly made horse, with plenty of character and of a type one would expect to make a successful sire. For tlfh.t reason it is to be regretted that he was not left entire, as a horse of his class and character would have been welcomed to any Australion stud. As it is, he will be worthless when he has done racing, but that„will not be for some time yet, as he is to all appearances sound. ' If he goes on racing for another season, he is likely to surpass the winnings of Gloaming.” CONFIRMING ENTRIES. PROVISION' FOR PENALTY. Racing club secretaries arc put to a great deal of trouble and mistakes in racecards frequently occur through owners and trainers failing to confirm in writing nominations Or acceptances. Dealing with' this matter, the New Zealand Racing Conference has recently issued a circular to ; all racing clubs in the Dominion, which says;— “I am directed by the executive committee to notify all clubs that it has been reported that compliance with Part XV., Rule 5, of the Rules of Racing, is very lax, consequently it is necessary for all clubs to see that owners and trainers strictly comply with that rule, and for any breach thereof the owners may be fined £2. It is essential that any entry, acceptance, declaration of forfeit or payment made by telegram or telephone shall bo confirmed in writing forthwith, and, if such confirmation be not delivered,- accompanied, by the necesary fees, to the secretary of the club within seven days, the failure should 1 be reported to the stewards or committee. The owner concerned is liable to be- fined £2 for not complying with the rule.” • ■ PHAR LAP. ANOTHER NEW RIDER. 1 PROBABLY M. McCARTEN. . Phar Lap has arrived in Sydney for the autumn meetings at Randwick, and the dual Derby winner during his stay may have another rider added to the rather big list of jockeys who have ridden him (says a Sydney writer). , J. Baker rode the first race the three-year-old won, and others who have piloted him in races include J. Munro (now in Germany), J. Pike, R. Lewis, W. Elliott and J. Brown. . It is likely that J. Pike will ride .Phar Lap in tho A.J.C. St. Lever, which looks at the complete morcy of tho champion, but in the long distance w.f.a. events, Pike will not be ablo to make the weight. It was rumoured that Maurice McCarton may have the mount on Phar Lap in some of his races other than tho St. Leger. H. R. Telford, lessoo-trainpr of Phar Lap, evidently believes in a variety of riders, judging by tho way he changes them so frequently. Phar Lap won three races-in Melbourne at the autumn meetings. Pike won the St. Leger on him, and in his other two successful riins W. Elliott was on him. Telford, by the way, has definitely decided to settle in Melbourne, and when the A.J.C. meeting is over he will transfer his stables from Caulfield to Mentone. BIG BETS. CENTURY TO A CIGAR. A pioturosque figure _ in bookmaking circles in London in Billy Alden died in February, following upon an accident. He was a member of Tattersall’s ring for many years, and an incident which made him famous was when ho laid £IOO to a cigar against a horse winning a race. Ho wont further by laying £IOO to a match with which to light tho cigar. The horse duly won (says an exchange). Mr Alden was noted throughout his career for his absoluto fairness. At the time of"his' death ‘he was owed moro than £40,000 for betting debts, but not once in his 'life did he buo a defaulting punter or tike them before the responsible racing authorities. A son, Mr A. Alden, lives in Australia, and a sister, ■Mrs Hill, resides in New Zealand. NOT COMING. ! STREPHON TO REMAIN IN ENGLAND. Whon Mr Sol Green left for England recently, he stated that Strephon (he

will race in England as Strephon II.), will have his first race in England in tho Great Jubilee Handicap at Kempton Park, on May 17. Tho main mission of the horse is tho Ascot Gold Cup, to be run on June 19. Win or lose, Mr Green said, Strephon would not bo returned to Australia when he had finished racing in England. GRADING OF DRIVERS. FEELING IN CANTERBURY. Tho general opinion in Canterbury trotting circles is that drivers should be gru ed, or, rather, that only certain drivers should be pemitted to drivo on metropolitan courses. This phase of the sport has been given prominence by the exhibitions at certain recent meetings, whore , races have been thrown away by incompetent driving. The drivers themselves complain of the’ lack of . ability shown in certain cases, but the public must first be con-, sidered. The rules of trotting now provide for an apprenticeship of. two years in a trot-; ting stable before a license will bo granted, but it is recognised that it is not tho younger drivers who are incompetent. It is mostly those who havo been in the sport for years and cannot recognise the fact that they are getting no better. i REPORTING ACCIDENTS. THE DUTY. OF DRIVERS. Owing to bad visibility caused by a belt of fir trees at Cheviot, it was almost impossible at times at the recent meeting to distinguish the different horses when racing down the back stretch, and the stipendiary steward did not notice Actor faff. It was the duty of M. Holmes, driver of Actor, to report the accident to the stipendiary ate ward, but this ho failed to do, being ignorant of any rule bearing on the matter (says an exchange),. There is, however, a very definito rule not generally known that pirte the responsibility on tho driver of a

horse meeting with an accident happens in horse meeting with an accident. It states that when an accident happens in a race the horsemen directly affected by it shall immediately after the race report to the stipendiary steward, who shall report to the chairman of the judicial committee. Any horseman failing to report may be fined a sum not exceeding £5.
