SHANNON

VALEDICTORY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, April 5. Over twenty members and friends gathered on the Shannon croquet green on Thursday afternoon to do honour to Mrs C. C. Franks, a very popular member of the club, who is shortly leaving tho district. A very'pleasant time was spent in playing games and afternoon tea wa3 served in front of tho pavilion. In presenting Mrs Franks with a handsome brass fruit dish, the president, Mrs Bovis, said that Mrs Franks. had been a member of tho club since the second year of ite existence and by putting much time and enthusiasm into tho game was soon an able representative of Shannon in matches throughout the district. The club was extremely sorry-to lose so good a member, and, while wishing her every happiness in her new homo, would console themselves with the hope that she would pay many visits to Shannon when she could be assured of a loyal welcome from all croquet friends. Mrs Bovis also asked that Mrs Franks convey to Mr Franks the club’s best wishes for prosperity in his new vcnjbre, and their grateful thanks for the many good • services rendered by him in the past. Mrs Franks was then asked to accept the token of esteem from the members of her club, believing that it carried with it the very best wishes of all. In reply, Mrs Franks expressed hor regret at having to leave the club where she had spent so many happy times, and sincerely thanked all for their kindness. Mrs Franks also reecived a trophy which she had won in 20 minuto croquet competitions played before Christmas. The singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and “Auld Lang Syne” closed a happy afternoon. . . In the usual croquet competition play on Wednesday afternoon Mrs Blaikio was the winner of tho trophy. At the monthly meeting of the School Committee held on Thursday eyening the headmaster (Mr Mark) reported that a. small piece of gTound had been put in potatoes this season, tho potatoes realising £l2, and the seed potatoes had yet to bff disposed of. As a result of the recent school sports the headmaster handed over to the committee £6 12s towards the septic tank funds. The Education Boardnotified the committee that the annual grant in future would be £ll2 per year, payable three times a year. The chairman pointed out that this meant a reduction of £25 per year, as up to now they had been receiving quarterly payments of £34 ss. Tho committee resolved to protest against the reduction and also against the board only making three payments per year instead of quarterly. The committee received with regret the resignation of Miss Sinclair who has been infant mistress at the local school for the past five years. Miss Sinclair has been appointed infant mistress at the Upper Hutt School and will take up hor duties on May Ist. While motoring from Levin to Shannon on Wednesday evening a car. driven by Mr P. Morse skidded in the metal and overturned when negotiating the bend in the road at the foot of Potts Road. Mr Morse and Miss McKenzie, of Tokomaru, who accompanied him escaped with minor scratches, the car receiving damage to the hood and windscreen.
