(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAIvI, March 21. It is more than probablo that a bowling rink will make tho journey to Blenheim at Easter time. Art alarm was sounded on tho Otaki siren on Friday afternoon and within a very short time several members, with the engine, were on tho scene of tho outbreak —a shed at tho rear of Mr Georgo Gordon’s being alight. However, as tho firo had not a strong hold it had been subdued by Mr Charles Gordon before tho arrival of tho brigade. A very representative gathering of local and district patrons gathered at tho fire station on Wednesday evening, tho occasion being tho opening night of tho Otaki Volunteer Fire Brigade’s euchre series. During tho evening special prizes wore donated by Mrs Ranson (2) and Mr Stewart. These prizes were allotted, at intervals, to tho players who were successful in getting tho “first lone-hands.” Theso prizes were won by Miss Beauchamp, Fireman Childs and Fireman Snowdon (Mr Stowart’s prize). Tho ladies’ first prize was won by Mrs Beauchamp, and that for gentlemen by Mr L. Kilmister. Tho consolation prizes wero awarded to Mrs C. Jones and Fireman Merwood. A special, which was awarded by scaled number, was won by Mrs Fairley. Mr W. Vaughan, of Otaki, has been appointed subenumcrator by the Government to collect the agricultural and pastoral statistics for the Horowhenua and the Hutt districts.

Mr and Mrs Larsen and family, of Inglewood, have decided to take up their residence in Otaki. Mr Frank Muray, who has been on tho staff of the Bank of New Zealand for tho past 18 months, has received notice of transfer to Palmerston North. Mr Woodroofe, of Carterton, will fill the vacancy hero. Mr Alf Furso, who lias been an inmato of the _ Palmerston North Hospital, returned to his homo at Otaki on Wednesday, much benefited by the treatment received. In another two weeks Mr Fursc should be quito fit for his duties. Mr Buick, brother to Mr J. L. Buick, is improving in health. Mr Phillips Manakau) who is sufforing from internal trouble, is making good progress. Mr Keith Voitro, who recently broko both arms, mado his final visit to tho hospital on Wednesday arid had tho splints _ removed. He hopes to resume his work in a very short time. Mr J. Ayro is still in very indifferent health from serious nerve trouble, and is likely to be in hospital for somo timo yot. Mr Percy Rhodes, exteacher at the Otaki School, is looking well, but his hip is still very troublesome. Mr F. Now, who had both ankles broken, is progressing favourably, and hopes to be homo for a timo at Easter. Miss Flutoy was admitted to tho hospital on Wednesday. The friends of Mr F. Carinont will regrot to learn that ho was compelled to return to tho Palmorston North Hospital, again yesterday, Mr Carmont was about town last week when it was thought that ho was well on tho road to recovery, but ho sufforod a sudden relapse with the result that ho decided to go baok to the hospital. • Tho annual mooting _of tho Otaki Fire Board was hold last night, Mr W.. Burns Smith presiding. Mr Smith was unanimously olcctod chairman for tho ensuing year. Superintendent Cockrell reported for tho year as follows:—Fires, threo; falso alarms, 1 (unintendod) ; avoragq attendance at musters was 13.5; mombors at beginning of year, 17; mombors at close of year; 16.
