NEW GOLF CLUB.

iWORK ON COURSE PROCEEDING. READY FOR PLAY IN APRIL. Work is proceeding apace on the deviation links for the newly-formed Palmerston North Golf Club and the course will be ready for play in April. The course is being laid out under the direction of Mr J. R. Galloway, the Manawatu Club’s professional, who considers that a really good nine-hole course can be provided almost immediately and a further nine hojes later. Work was commenced last Thursday, and the greens are being cut, formed and top-dressed with grass seed. It is anticipated that they will be quite ready for play in April. When the greens are completed the course will be cleared up and the fairways cut with a hay mower. Disc harrows will then be used. There are plenty of natural bunkers and hazards and no Artificial ones will be put in this year. That part of the site between Rangitikei Line and Roy Street, which was levelled by the Public Works Department, will not be used at present as the clay which has been put on is not quite suitable. The area will probably be later used for another nine holes, but expert advice will be obtained before any action is taken in this direction. The other portion from Roy Street to Milson’s Line is in excellent condition. The first tee will be at a point almost opposite Roy Street and the first three holes will be on the Boundary Road side of the first cutting. Near Milson a turn is made and the course, crossing the cutting, returns towards Roy Street, the next six holes being between the two cuttings. The total length of the nine holes is about 3000 yards. The longest hole is 495 yards and the shortest about 125 yards. The ehort one, however, will be a trap for the unwary. If the ball is not sent absolutely straight to its destination it will be almost certain to drop into the cutting, while the green is perched on the edge of the bank. A local rule will probably be made in the shape of the loss of a stroke and distance, to provide for cases of golfers entering the cutting. The cutting will be fenced to provide for the safety of players. .
