PAHIATUA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PAHIATUA, Feb. 22.

At Carnival Park to-day both the Anglican and Presbyterian Sunday schools held their annual picnics, the day, though overcast, remaining fine. Each school ran its own races, while several inter-school contests also took place. During the afternoon tea interval, Rev. A. F. Sutherland (Presbyterian) made mention of the fact that Air H. D. Grocott, who until recently had been superintendent of tho Presbyterian Sunday School was leaving shortly to take up residence in Wellington. The Sunday school scholars wore sorry to hear that ho was leaving and had contributed towards a present of a Chinese dinner gong. Master Noel Lett, on behalf of the scholars presented the token of their esteem'to Mr Grocott. In thanking tho members of tho Sunday school for their greatly appreciated gift, Mr Grocott stated' that it had been a pleasure to teach them and hoped that they would support Mr Leslie Holdaway, the new superintendent, in the same loyal manner as they had supported him. Air T. Carmichael of Christchurch was a visitor to Pahiatua this week. Air J. R. Spaering, who died at Waihi recently, was an ex-resident of Pahiatua, having been a member of tho local Alunicipal Band for a number of years. He is survived by a widow and four children. Mr F. Nutter, of Pahiatua, is spending his annual leave in Dunedin. Airs T. Beveridge, of Wellington, has been the guest of Mrs W. L. Tattle, of Pahiatua. Aliss D. Digby-Smith, of Pahiatua, is spending her annual vacation in Wellington. A party of 22 swimmers from the local club are to attend a swimming carnival at Wanganui next month by invitation. They will be billeted out by members of the Gonville Swimming Club for one night.
