RANGITIKEI

(From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Feb. 21. Percy Warren, a Maori was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour, at Wanganui to-day for assaulting William Shindler so as to cause actual bodily harm, in a billiard saloon in Hunterville last November. Mangawcka, Hunterville and Marton croquet players contested at Marton on Tuesday in the first round for the oup donated by Mrs A. G. Simpson. Marton won on the aggregate, the scores being: Marton 68, Mangawcka 66, Hunterville 58. An interesting legal point was submitted for decision by Mr Justice Reed at the Wanganui Supreme Court arising out of an assignment by a person who subsequently became bankrupt. Mr Maclean, on behalf of the Deputy Official Assignee at Taihapc, sought a declaration that (1) all moneys payable in respect of a contract were part of the bankrupt estate of George Randolph Hall, and (2) the assignment of the moneys due under the contract made by bankrupt, prior to his adjudication was of no effect as against the Official Assignee in bankruptcy. His Honour reserved his decision. Miss M. Lourie, of Silverhope, has returned from hospital. Mrs Langdon, of Hunterville, is visiting Auckland.' Miss N. Mair is a Hunterville visitor to Pahiatua. Mr George Orr, inspector of stock for the Taihape-Hunterville district, will shortly leave for Hamilton, where he will join the staff of the Native Lands Department.
