LIFE-SAVING

DEMONSTRATION AT FOXTON. During the week-end, the Island Bay Life-Saving Club journeyed to Foxton at the invitation of the local lifesavers. They were entertained at a dance on Saturday evening, and on Sunday gave exhibitions on the Foxton beach of surf life-saving and the land drills taught by the Royal Life-Saving Society. A brilliant day and a calm sea drew large numbers to the beach, which presented an animated appearance with more than 1000 people assembled. Mr W. C. Collier, chairman of the Manawatu head centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society, briefly welcomed the Island Bay members, who, he said, had travelled at their own expense in order to give the local club a helping hand. It was just such sportsmanship as this, Mr Collier added, tha characterised swimmers and life-savers and made the work really worth while. He thanked those also who had been good enough to billet the team. It was then announced that a short sports programme would be held for the children during the afternoon and the life-saving teams would give exhibitions and compete for a trophy donated by Mr W. Ingram, of Palmerston North. Mr Collier explained the various methods of rescue and release, resuscitation, and promotion of warmth, as they were demonstrated on land by the visitors who received the hearty plaudits of the large crowd for their finished exposition. The sevenmen reel rescue was won by the Island Bav A team, who subsequently gave a fine “alarm” four man rescue exhibition.

Several races for the children were ver- popular, judging bv the entries and the interested crowd which lined the course. The sum of £8 was collected for the Foxton Club’s funds and two amounts of ten shillings were received from donors who desired to remain auonvmnns. The club’s thanks are due to Messrs. W. Ingram,S . Austin, and others for trophies and subscriptions for the life-oaving and sports competitions.
