NEGLIGENT MOTORIST.

SIX MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT. WANGANUI, Feb. 21. Six months’ imprisonment with hard labour was the penalty His Honour Mr Justice Reed imposed on George Mason Glenn, who had been found guilty of negligent driving and causing the deaths of two people. “You have been convicted of the offence of negligent driving, and no one who listened to the evidence can have cause for doubt as to the correctness of the finding,” said His Honour, when addressing the prisoner in the Supreme Court at Wanganui to-day. “Reckless motorists are common not only in this city, but also everywhere, and it is neessary to inflict substantial penalties. One cannot help but feel a certain amount of sympathy for a respectable young man being placed in the position you occupy, but however unpleasant a duty, such consideration has to lie disregarded with a view to the necessity of endeavouring to deter others. After giving full effect to the recommendation of the jury, the least sentence I find 1 can impose is six months’ imprisonment with hard labour.” Glenn’s present motor license was also cancelled, and prisoner was disqualified from holding a further license for a period of three years.
