RANGITIKEI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Aug. 30. The Rangitikei Rugby Union met last night, Mr Lloyd Hammond presiding. An offer by the Taranaki Union of a match with Rangitikei at Marton on September 18 was accepted. The local union is to pay the visitors’ hotel expenses and Mr E. A. Caldow will manage the local team. Saturday, September 7, was fixed as the date of the Rata v. Athletic Charity Cup .contest. Messrs W. E. Gibbons and T. A. Wilson were deputed to interview the Marton Borough 1 Council in regard to improvements to the playing area in the park. Douglas Symes, alias Robert Forbes Raverty, alias Tommy Daley, appeared in tho Police Court at Taihape charged with breaking and entering and theft from the premises of Frank Hamill, hairdresser, on June 19, and Allan Smith, billiard saloon proprietor, on the same date. The sum involved in cash and goods totalled over £l6. Accused was committed to the Supremo Court at Wellington for sentence. While Mr H. A. Lamb, storekeeper, of Mataroa, was cranking the engine of his lorry, it backfired and the vehicle caught alight. With great rapidity tho flames spread to tho adjacent store and bakehouse and in a very little time only the charred remains of all three could be 6een. Very little of the store stock wa3 saved, though a safe was recovered intact, and a motor car also was saved. Mr Lamb’s previous store and bakery close to Mataroa railway station were burnt down just over a year ago. Several owners and trainers, with their candidates for the race meeting at Marton next week, have arrived in town. It is noteworthy that in several instances the modern motor lorry transport for the animals has been used. Tho Marton executive of the Rangitikei Political Reform League denies tho accuracy of a statement emanating from one of its officials, and published in these notes a few days ago, that tho party is seeking a new candidate for tho Rangitikei seat in place iof Mr W. S. Glenn. Mr and Mrs R. J. Moore and family, of Marton, are spending a holiday at Castlocliffe.
