TIMBER STRIKE COMMENT.
SYDNEY PAPER’S DEFENCE. S\ r DNEY, Aug. 27. At to-day’s hearing before the Full Court of an application for a rule nisi against the Sydney Morning Herald. affidavits tendered by editorial writers claim that the comments in connection with the timber strike, which are the subject of complaint, related to bona fide reports and references to the basher gang, and were not intended to apply to Mr J. S. Garden and other union leaders, whose cases were before the courts. The timber strikes, stated the affidavits, were so important from the public standpoint that continuous references to them were considered necessary. The statements in the reports and articles were published bona tide from a sense of duty.
