SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION.

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVtNG. It was an eager, expectant happy throng of children tbit wended its way yesterday afternoon to St. Andrew’s Church to participate in the annual prize-giving under the auspices of the Palmerston North Sunday School Union. The church was well filled with parents, friends and children. The new president for the year, Rev. J. D. McArthur, presided. He was' supported on the platform by the ministers of the various churches, the super, ir.tendents of the schools represented, and the three examiners. After the singing of a hymn. Rev. Bycroft, of the Congregational Church, led in prayer. A most interesting and able address was given to the children by Pastor Mathews, of tire Baptist Church, who by the aid of the blackboard, gained, and held the attention of the gathering throughout. ? The most interesting item on the programme was, of course, the distribution of prizes won at the recent Scripture examination. The secretary mentioned that it was a cause for congratulation that a larger number had sat for the examination this year than on any former occasion—l 46 had entered, 139 of whom had gained prizes, as against 102 prize-winners last year. Five scholars —Amos Hardisty, Lionel Scriver, Peggy Haydon, Dorothy Agnes Foreman and Violet Pagan, gained the possible number of marks; those scholars were fortunate in receiving two prizes each, one from the union and one from. Messrs G. A. Bennett and Co. As they stood on the platform together, they received the prizes and congratulations of the president and the rousing plaudits of the large gathering. A pleasing incident in the afternoon’s programme was the presentation of a valuable book to each of the three examiners, Messrs Low, Campbell and Ilancox, who for many years past have kindly done the examinacy. Mr Low briefly responded. A hearty vpte of thanks was carried by acclamation to the trustees of St. Andrew’s Church, to the organiser, Mr Graham, to Messrs G. H. Bennett and Co. for special prizes and to the secretary. Thus ended a most successful and happy prize-giving.
