BYRD EXPEDITION.

LIFE;AT BAY OF WHALES. RETURN OF THE SUN. (By Russell Owen, copyright 1928 by the New York Times Company and the St. Louis Post Dispatch; all rights for publication reserved throughout the world. Wireless to the New York Times.) BAY OF WHALES. Aug. 24. The sun returned yesterday as tne regular sun should. It sent its light flashing across the Barrier top, to spill over the edge and touch with fire tops of the ice masses on the bay. Far down on the south cliff tire walls reflectd the brilliant golden light for which we have waited so long. - The ice cliffs sparkled like gigantic mirrors, winking back a message of welcome to the sun, as if there was some secret understanding between them and they were amused at our boisterous happiness. Winter is far from over; our coldest weather lias still to come. The surface of the snow everywhere round the camp is many feet higher than when we started hibernation. A flag was raised to-day at Commander Byrd’s order, and as it whipped out in a twenty-mils wind everyone uncovered, although the temperature was 40 degrees below zero and the wind gripped ears and noses painfully. Theii the British flag was unfurled, then the Norwegian emblem, and everyone saluted each with bared head. _ The ceremony occupied . several minutes, and when it was over there was a rush for cover. Jack ’OBrien hastily unfurled a green pennant for Ireland, and did a snake dance round the doorway, but the wind was biting and soon overcame even Hibernian enthusiasm. We celebrated a big day with a dinner that had turkey as the chief item on the menu. The Graf Zeppelin’s signals were clearly heard yesterday. Late in the evening the position was given as 1500 miles from Tokio.
