COMMITTEE OF HOUSE.
WITNESSES FROM AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. There was quite a flutter in the House of Representatives this morning when Mr Macp'nerson moved that a committee should have permission to sit while the House was sitting io deal with a very important matter. Messrs Fraser and Holland raised a strong objection. # , Mr Macpherson said that yesterday s meeting of the committee had to be abandoned owing to a Government Party caucus. (Laughter). Witnesses from Auckland were being heard. Mr Samuel: Is it the petition of A. B. Donald that is being considered? Members called for a division and the bells .were rung amid a buzz of conversation. Eventually it was stated that the committee would need only to sit for half an hour to hear Auckland witnesses who otherwise would have to stay in Wellington over the week-end. On this announcement being made, permission was given the committee to sit. »
