HERD TESTING.
The monthly meeting of the Manawatu Herd Testing Association was concluded yesterday afternoon. Considerable discussion took place on the operations of the calf registration system for the coming season, several members stressing the importance of calf-marking both to the association and to the farmer. This great calf-marking system, it was mentioned, was inaugurated by Mr C. M. Hume, secretary for ithe Dominion Federation of Group Herd Toting Associations, and only (associations affiliated with the above are permitted to carry out this work. Only calves from dams reaching the required standard of butter-fat production and by a registered sire are eligible for marking, hence a calf by being marked is greatly enhanced in value as a certificate is supplied showing the breed, herd book number, and butter-fat tacking of the sire and the breed, and the bufterfiat production of the dam. Such marked calves have brought up to £9 in the Waikato, and should be worth equally as much here. Attention was also drawn to the large number of farmers who have still to recognise the many advantages to he derived from teeing their herds with a co-operative association.
