AUSTRALIAN RACING

CURTAILMENT OF DAYS.

CONSIDERATION BY GOVERNMENTS.

AGITATION IN SYDNEY.

(United Press Association.—By Electric

Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 23, 11.55 a.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 23. The Victorian and New South Wales Governments are considering the advisability of ' curtailing a number of horse and pony race meetings. The Victorian Government proposes to reduce the number of racing days by 50. Mostly mid-week suburban and pony meetings will be affected; these meetings are adjudged responsible for the grave economic loss.

Agitation for curtailment has now begun in Sydney, where there is racing practically five days a week. The Sun states in an editorial: — “The whole business of mid-week pony racing is a reflection on the intelligence and serious purpose of the people of this State, providing horrible examples of ill-spent- lives.”
