WAIKATO SYNOD.

HEATED DISCUSSION.

Per Press Association. HAMILTON, July 4. After three days’ peaceful session, a Btorm broke into the Waikato Synod this afternoon. Mr J. G. Wynyard (Te Awamutu) moved a severe vote of censure on Canon Kayll for an article in a Wellington paper supporting Bishop Cherrington. Mr Wynyard accused Canon Kayll of breach of priviledge in publishing a statement regarding the standing committee’s resolution expressing sympathy with the Bishop and added that the statement was incomplete, as there was no question of a vote of confidence in the Bishop. Rev. Mr Connolly (Te Aroha) replied vigorously to Canon Kayll’s statement reflecting on himself. Mr T. G. Hirst (New Plymouth) supported' Mr Connolly. Mr Douglas Hay objected to Canon Kayll’s and Mr Connolly’s contributions to the press on diocesan disputes and added that he intended to resign from the standing committee. Canon Gavin suggested that Canon Kayll should apologise to the Synod. Canon Kayll, replying, said that he had been urged by many to publish the facts. He had resigned from the parish of Stratford -in order to have free hands. Parishioners there told him that they had been urged not to contribute funds while the present Bishop remained. Major J. B. Hme objected to Canon •Kayll’s statement when the parishioners were not present to reply. Canon Kayll said: “You may pass any vote of censure you like. I shall continue fine campaign as I have begun it.’* He was convinced that the Bishop had done nothing to merit the abuse and hostility shown in the diocese. He offered, before the putting of the motion, to resign as clerical secretary of the Synod, which deferred the vote on the censure motion, and asked Canon Kayll to continue as secretary.
