LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. Tho volumo o£ business on the Stock Exchanges last week was well up to tho average, and for the third week in succession New Zealand Breweries shares had the greatest turnover. Business opened at 70s 6d, but under strong and persistent demand tho shares advanced pence at a timo and there was a transfer at 73s towards the week-end. Other brewery shares received very little attention: even Staples and Co. were somewhat neglected, though they sold at 49s and 48s 6d. Crown Brewery were in steady demand at 7s 9d. Government and municipal and other securities were rather slow, and little business was done in them. There was one transaction in the 4£ per cents, at £99 17s 6d; the 5£ per cents. (1933) changed hands at £lOl 5s and £lOl, and the 5£ per cents. (1936) at £lOl 10s. Auckland Harbour Board 6 per cents. (1941) sold ut £lO5, and Lyttelton Harbour Board 5£ per cents. (1933) at £IOO. ~ The business done in bank shares was relatively small, but prices wero very firm. The dividend declaration by tho directors of the Bank of New Zealand was fully expected and was discounted in the value of the shares which changed hands at 62s 6d and 62s 9d; Bank of New Zealand long-term mortgage shares sold at 295. Other sales of bank shares wero Bank of Australasia at £l4 15s, Commercial Bank at 30s 4d, Bank of New South Wales at £sl ss, Union Bank at £ls 15s 6d, and £ls 16s, Australian Bank of Commerce at 375, National Bank of Australasia £5 paid at £9 11s 6d and £9 Us and Commercial Bank of Sydney at £27 7s 6d. In the financial section there was a good turnover in Goldsbrough Mort, dealings being at 49s 9d, 50s, 50s 6d and 50s 7d. Business was done in Dalgcty and Co. at £ls 4s 6d and £ls ss. Wright, Stephenson and Do. ordinary at 25s 3d, and preference at 18s, New Zealand Guarantee Corporation ordinary at 93 3d, and United Building at 15s 9d and 15s 3d. Insurance shares were firm and there were more dealings than in the previous week. National Insurance 6old steadily at 16s 3d, New Zealand at 47s 3d, South British at 65s 6d, and Australian Provincial at 10s 6d.

There was a fair demand for gas shares, but business was restricted to Auckland at 24s Id, and Christchurch at 275. Meat shares were in the same position, a good demand with a limited turnover. New Zealand Refrigerating 20s paid changed hands at 16s 3d, and 10s paid at 7s 3d, and Canterbury Frozen Meat ordinary at £8 15s and £9.

In shipping and coal shares there was little doing. Union Steam preference were transferred at 21s, Northern Steam at 14s 3d and P. and O. deferred stock at 60s. Westport Coal were firm, selling at 32s 6d and 33s 6d. Pukemiro Collieries changed hands at 62s 3d and Taupiri Coal at 25s 6d. In the miscellaneous group, relatively small business was done. British Tobacco received the most attention, eight parcels changing hands at 49s 10£d and 49s sd. Other sales were Electrolytic Zinc ordinary at 36s 4d and 36s 6d, and preference at 375, Hume Pipe at 18s Id, Dunlop Rubber at 27s 7d, Australian Iron and Steel at 21s 9d, Wilson’s Cement at 40s 9d and 41s 6d ex dividend, Farmers’ Qo-operativo Auctioneering A preference at 18s 3d, Farmers’ Trading Company at 8s Bd, Scoullar Company at 21s 6d, Beath and Co. at 31s 6d, Is paid at 8s 9d.
