VALEDICTORY. ASHHUIIST, June 10. A pleasant function was held at “Haven Ho,” the residence of Mr and Mrs W. N. Brewer, one evening last week, when members of the School Committee and the Domain and Cemetery Board gathered to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Bauekham, who, after nearly 40 years’ residence in Ashhurst, are leaving for Mangatainoka. Mr Brewer, chairman of tho bodies represented, presented a crystal bowl to the guests of the evening, commenting on the keen and active interest that Mr Bauekham had taken in the affairs of the school and the Cemetery and Domain Board. Messrs \V. G. Romley and G. R. Taylor supported Mr Brewer’s remarks, wishing Mr and Mrs Bauekham happiness in their new home. i In reply, Mr Bauekham thanked those present for their kind remarks and for the evening given in his and Mrs Bauckham’s honour. A full programme of items, games and competitions had been prepared by the host and hostess who spared no effort to make the evening a success. Items were rendered by Mrs Taylor (pianoforte solo), Messrs Brewer (cornet solo), H. Bristow, Maunder and Trass (songs). SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the usual monthly meeting of the School Committee there were present, Messrs W. N. Brewer (chairman), H. Bristow, \V. Cheyne, A. McKinley, J. H. Summer and M. P. Wilkin. An apology for absence was received from the secretary, Mr H. J. Woodroofe. Mr A. I). Bauekham wrote tendering his resignation as a member of tho committee. This was accepted with regret and a vote of thanks and appreciation of services was passed. Mr W. Cheyne was appointed to fill tho vacancy. The chairman extended a welcome to the headmaster (Mr Fenwick) and to Mr Cheyne. The question of religious instruction in the school was discussed at some length and the resolution passed by the previous committee on the matter was amended to allow of the instruction to be given on one day in each week, between 9 and 9.30 a.m. It was emphasised that the attendance of pupils would be voluntary. It was reported that Mr Bauckham’s section adjoining the school was under offer for a horse-paddock and that representations would be made to the Education Board with the object of getting financial assistance. It was decided to close the school for one day for the winter., show. The headmaster was authorised to institute a voluntary stationery fund in order to provide the children with standard nibs, pencils and other requisites. Accounts totalling £lB 8s were parsed for payment.
