TEACHING THE PUPILS.

DEVELOPMENT OP TOWN. VISITING LOCAL INSTITUTIONS. With the object of gaining some idea of the development of the town the pupils of the fifth standard, at the College Street School are. to be shown over institutions, factories, etc., in the borough and will later discuss the places visited. The master in charge of the class informed a “Standard” reporter that the aim of these inspections was twofold. The most important aspect was that the children would become better acquainted with their own town and would be better fitted in later life to take up the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. Then again the places visited would give the children subjects on which to write essays with first-hand information, instead of deriving their data from boots as was often the case at present. The master continued that the scheme •would take three stages. At first the children would visit some institution. Then discussions would be held in the class so that the knowledge gained would t>e disseminated, and then essays, not actually on the visit but on some subject relative to it, would be written. , Yesterday the course was commenced, the children visiting the fire brigade station. Under the guidance of Deputy-Superintendent Milverton, they were shown all over the building and found much to interest them in the engines, fire alarm system, etc.
