TRANSPORT OF SHEEP.

PROTEST AGAINST AVORK AT NIGHT. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 10. The support of the Canterbury A. and P. Association is to be given to the effort of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union to have legislation brought down to prevent the carrying of sheep in motor-lorries at night. At a meeting of the committee of the association to-day, Mr Lockhead said that the permitting of stock being transported at night presented too large an opening to sheep-stealers. He knew of numerous cases where sheep had been stolon at night and carted away in motor trucks. There was too good an opportunity offered to dishonest persons for making easy money. A sheep owner in Oxford had suffered extensively from night raids by motorlorry thieves, who found it easy to get away with a number of sheep. He also suggested that auctioneers .be compelled to stipulate the earmarks on the various lots of sheep offerd for sale. Mr J. D. Hall said that legislation to prevent the carting of sheep at night was most desirable. He knew it was a common thing for owners to lose' stock in this way. _ It was agreed in the discussion that legislation should require only that no sheep should be loaded or carted at night without a permit and that sheep so carted would be .subject to inspection by any police officer. _ A motion was carried supporting the proposals of the sheep owners. /
