METHYLATED SPIRIT DRINKING. MENACE TO THE KING COUNTRY. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, April 9. Serious allegations in regard to the growing evil of methylated spirit drinking in the King Country were made by the police in the Te Kuiti court to-day, when a first offender for drunkennesss appeared. It was stated that his condition was the result of methylated spirit drinking. Sergeant Fearnley stated that tho amount of methylated spirit that was being consumed constituted a growing menace to the King Country. The evil was increasing among the Maoris and pakehas. Tho Maori Council had taken the matter up among its own people and was endeavouring to combat the practice. The Bench expressed the opinion that the matter was a serious one and one upon which legislation should be introduced. ’ The health of the community was concerned.
